More reliable than a Camry or Corolla is probably going to be a Prius.

A Prius is never an option!

My wife loves her Prius.

I'm not real wild about driving it, but I certainly don't mind the road trip with two adults, two teenagers, and luggage for 4, but still averaging 51 mpg.

Yeah, since a Corolla or a Camry are so much more awesome than a Prius (I've owned them all at one point)

Sedans...meh. Boring and less utilitarian to boot. Go hatch.

Just curious, but why would you be able to stomach buying a corolla but not a Prius?

That MPG and reliability rating on them is hard to argue with... I still couldn't bring myself to buy one.

I'm probably going to get a Corolla. If regularly serviced, what's the threshold hold on these cars as far as miles go? I see a lot of good prices on Toyotas that are in the 100,000 - 120,000 range on miles already.
200k easily if properly maintained. 300k isn't unheard of on a basic 4-cyl 'yota

Ha, ok? They are both at the far end of the lame category.

Mazda 3

Reliable and cheaper than a Toyota Corolla.

Buying a used Prius? Eventually these used Priuses (Prui?) are gonna need new hybrid battery packs.

Something to consider.

My sister pretty much abuses here 2001ish Camry, and it has over 200k miles on it. Only recently started giving her some trouble, but she's still driving it.

I second this. Mazda makes fantastic cars, and they're different than most cars on the road. Nothing major, but lots of little things from a company that takes pride in being a little different.

Idk when I looked I couldn't stomach paying 10k for a car with 100k on the clock. Was cheaper per mile to step up to new stripper Corolla.

Mazda 3 a good choice.

Y'all do realize Prius can still run on gas engine when battery cells die. And I believe there will be more battery cell options in the future.

Having said that, add Avalon to the list.

When I was looking in that category recently, I was considering a 2008/2009 Lexus GS350. I ended up going with a 2010 MB E350 because I got a great deal on one, but would likely have bought the Lexus if I hadn't stumbled on the Benz deal. The Lexus will be super reliable, but much less boring than the Camry/Accord/Corolla/Civic option.

What about an old Subaru? I've heard they're very reliable, but would be interested to hear anecdotal evidence for or against.

In Texas you have two types of old subarus; those rusted out from use up north, and those driven for a decade or more by Texans who don't realize they have no use for AWD and know nothing about cars or maintenance, but like the residual values of their Subaru.

Good luck with that either way.

You think Subaru owners maintain their car less than your average Camry/Accord/etc driver? My experience meeting Subie owners was the opposite of this as they learn to wrench and have such good experiences they stick to the brand. But this was with WRX owners primarily.

In my experience Subaru's are nothing but trouble.

Any well maintained Toyota or Lexus sedan with the lowest miles possible is the correct choice albeit a boring one.

A Toyota Matrix should be a consideration too. 2013 was the last year for them. I have an '05 XRS with 235K and it still gets 32 on the road and 26 around town. I drive it about 800 miles a week and leave it running 95% of the time. It'll hold an 8' 2x4 with the hatch closed. A 4x8 sheet of plywood will fit, but it hangs out about 2'.

We're on our third Hyundai Sonata, first two went well over 200k before we got rid of them, and this one is already over 100k. No issues, basic maintenance.

I'd go a little older and get an Avalon. Probably better maintained, quieter ride, and everything else at least as good as the Camry or entry level Lexis.

If you're willing to go just a bit rougher or wanting to spend less, you could look for a Chevy or Ford sedan with a V8. They'll have squeeks and rattles galore but for the most part should still be solid. I would never buy Chrysler anything. Keep in mind that while the power train in these things are solid, you'll have to replace things like the fuel and water pumps more regularly if they haven't already been replaced.
