Are you brand loyal to engine oils?

To all,

I am curious what the board thinks about sticking with a certain brand of oil for each application. In my Duramax I have used Delo, Rotella, and Mobil 1, sticking with the called for 15w-40 flavor. At the first oil change I used Delo, then went to the Rotella T5 which is a semi-synthetic during the winter, since it can get down to below 0 at times here in Chicago. I noticed that with the Rotella, the truck would use about 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart between oil changes at 4500 miles. When winter broke, I switched to Mobil Delvac since the price is the better than anything else at wallyworld, and the truck does not use a drop on the Delvac.

I have no desire to go to the ultra expensive 5w-40 full synthetics, since in the winter I plug the truck in when the temps are below 32. I do use the better oil filters, either the Mobil or synthetic Fram. I am not sure about the AC Delco, as the E-core has had mixed reviews.

So, does the board find one good oil and stick with it, or change based on price and/or availability? I have heard that changing every now and then is good since each has different detergent additives and it helps keep the engine clean.

I only use Motul in my Volkswagen. I know there are other options that are likely a little less expensive and still meet the VW spec but I'm just fancy.

Mobil 1 for me.

Mobil 1 delvac in the Duramax for Texas weather. Jeep gets recommended Mobil 1 conventional in whatever weight it calls for (can't remember).

So I guess you could say I prefer Mobil 1

In my 2000 Cummins I only used Delo except when they were changing over to the new formula (maybe around 2007) and I couldn't find it.

I only use Motorcraft Semi Synthetic in my F150.

My previous vehicles I mainly used Valvoline.

IMHO using what's specified for your engine and regular oil changes are the key. Back when I sold auto parts I probably changed it more frequently than I needed to because with the employee discount an oil change was less than 10 bucks (I'm old).

That is what I have put in my wifes '14 Silverado since new. I have thought about trying other brands for hers, but it runs great on that so I have not messed with it. However, I may try the new Valvoline next time just to see how it goes.

I've been using penzoil platinum in my GM half ton for 3 years now. It was the only one I could regularly find in 0w-20 when the free GM oil changes were up, and I just stuck with it.

I started using penzoil platinum euro 5w-40 on the wife's car. No issues there either.

I believe 1ags suggested this oil back then due to the DI aspect of the 6.2 engine. It has run great with it for 26000 miles. The new Valvoline is supposed to be engineered for DI engine cleanliness, so I may give it a shot.

I have the 5.3 and now the sads at my lack of 6+ liters of displacement. Thanks a lot!

On a serious note: I'll probably stick with the ain't broke don't fix it school of thought. It's cheap for a full synthetic and hasn't given me any issues yet.

I jump on the Walmart/Sams Mobil 1 deals when they come along, but otherwise no.

Not really brand loyal. Any major brand synthetic is going to be a very good oil these days. That said, I like Red Line in my fancy cars and typically put Mobil 1 in everything else.
