Okay Ags, here is what I am going through. Sorry in advance for the long story...

my yukon has 120k miles on it. At about 100k miles, I started having some transmission slipping and temperature issues. The trans temp would rise to almost 300 degrees after about 20 minutes of driving while slipping occasionally when shifting. I did some research and ended up doing a transmission flush and added all new fluids. -- still same issues.
so then I added a new torque convertor and the gear slippage stopped but I was still having temperature issues.

so I dealt with it for a long time and after talking to a mechanic, he convinced me to buy a brand new transmission from gm including a new cooler. $3000 later and I am STILL having temperature problems.

Now he is saying that he thinks I need to replace my cluster. He is basically saying that he thinks my transmission is running normal but that my cluster is just saying that my trans temperature is too hot when it actually isn't. But I dont really believe him... After driving for about 20 minutes with my brand new transmission, the temperature gets hot and doesnt really go down even if I stay on the high way for a long period of time without shifting gears. After driving on the highway for a while, If I get off at an exit and stop at a stop sign, it definitely seems like the transmission is laboring while showing the transmission hot message.

so my question is this: Is it possible that my cluster IS messed up and that it is telling my transmission that it is HOT when in fact it isnt? Would this cause my transmission to shift differently?

I recently moved so I am not dealing with that mechanic anymore, but I still want to resolve the issue. So I am wondering what my next action should be.

Thanks you!

The good news is you were going to need that new transmission anyway, even if it was just the cluster.

I suspect that an app or other tool that takes readings from OBD2 port can read the trans temp. I know HP Tuners can do this.

If it's still doing this after a new trans, I'd be confirming fluid level and trans cooler lines to make sure there are no crushes.

Schtick, ol boy has the lord's chosen 4l80e. That sum***** with a shift kit and good TC will hold 1k rwhp.

I'm sure you're right. Just my experience, and many others I know, with whatever the 5.3l 1/2 ton version is. Seem to crater between 120-160k

Thanks guys. I hope to have it looked at early next week if I can find somebody that knows what they are actually doing.

Does it have a towing package with the auxiliary transmission cooler? That's an additional point of failure if so.

Shouldn't be an issue since it was replaced as well.

Yes it was replaced. I actually popped in the shop when they were finishing up putting it in.

Are you in Houston?

I have a laptop that we can read actual temps from the TFT sensors vs the Gauge/display.

Also, if you are really getting 300F driving, the fluid would be black within 3000 miles of use.
