Should I trade it in?

I have a 2013 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3 L with 84,000 miles on it. I bought it used a little over 2 years ago with a little over 50,000 miles.

Recently, my check engine light has been switching on and off, so I took it into O'Reilly's and they said the code read that something was wrong with the catalytic converter system.

I then took it into a local auto shop and had them evaluate it. They ended up wanting to replace the cat, O2 sensors, transmission flush, full tune up, and a host of other things. They quoted me $3200 for everything, $2700 for just the cat. I politely told them that they were out of their ****ing minds and picked it up. I found a guy who works on cars in his spare time, and he ended up replacing the O2 sensors on it for $120, plus the cost of parts.

But the light just came back on. The guy had told me there was something screwy in the 2013 5.3 L engines that caused a couple of the cylinders to leak oil, so he wanted to do a tuneup and line flush while replacing the catalytic converter if the O2 sensors weren't the problem.

At this point, I'm just kind of fed up with the truck. And if I'm going to likely spend over 2 grand on the damn thing, I think I would rather trade it in at this point, while it still has some resale value.

So I came to you Texags, should I trade this in, or am I just being an emotional *****?

What a noob. Cat balancing is the way of the future.

But seriously....I think you are being a whiny *****. A 2013? Personally, I think people are spoiled. Vehicles today are more reliable than they ever have been, even if they are more expensive to repair. Try owning a 1985 F150...or a 1970 Olds 442. You want to talk about fixing or adjusting things every weekend...LOL. Try pulling the codes on the 1970 to find out why it runs hot.

Anyway, that truck is not old. You can buy a LOT of repairs on a damn near new pickup like that for the cost of a new truck.

I'm rocking a 2002 F150 with 310,000 miles. It has an exhaust leak at the manifold, and the check engine light from an O2 sensor...or the exhaust leak...not sure.

I can literally have the most expensive shop in town pull the entire motor and transmission, have it rebuilt and upgraded, and still be WAY ahead on costs of a new F150.

Just a little perspective. YMMV.

Sure, but does your '02 have a genital seat fan and a Yeti sticker?

Let me guess, P0430? My brother's 2014 Sierra has the same issue. I think it is triggered by the emissions. He was also quoted about $2k in repairs. About a month after an oil change, he'll start getting Low Oil warnings. It's not dripping oil, but must be burning it. Those trucks use a pretty thin oil, if I remember correctly. I've stumbled across a couple forums where they'd added Lucas, and it seemed to fix the problem. I'm no mechanic, just sharing info.

It does not have a ball cooler. Also doesn't have a monthly payment....well...not most months anyway.

Yes that's the code. Thanks, I'll try that. It just seems insane that I need a new catalytic converter and only have 84,000 miles on the thing.

I've had to get new cats on both my wife's 2015 Tahoe and my 2014 Silverado. Both had fewer miles than yours does.

The cat should have been covered for 8 years/80k miles. That coverage is a federal regulation. You might see if GM will do a good will replacement.

That's being thrown by the passenger side downstream O2 sensor. When you get the custom tune that disables AFM, have your downstream O2 sensors turned off. If you actually have any issues, your upstream O2 sensors will tell you.

That code is likely thrown by use of gas with ethanol in it. Run some fuel system cleaner through a couple tanks and the code should go away.

Space out the downstream o2 sensors. 15 bucks and some drilling. Stupid gas we use is the problem.
