How long do you want to ignore this user?
Took my truck, 2013 f150 ecoboost, into the dealership this morning to get a problem with the engine looked at. I am well under the 60k mile powertrain warranty but when I start talking to the service manager he says my warranty has been canceled. I bought this truck used in June of 2015 with 12k miles on it from a Honda Dealership. When I bought it it had the window page that stated it came with the original warranty and not as is. I asked the service manager what would cause the warranty to be canceled and he said if the engine got water in it or was modified in some way etc. I told him I haven't done anything to it and asked if he could find out the reason why it was canceled. He gave the info to the service director and the director did some searching and found out the previous owner took it for an oil change at a non ford dealer and that place didn't put oil in and drove it dry, ultimately screwing the engine all up, thus the reason ford canceling the warranty. I looked and relooked at the car fax before I bought the truck and nothing was on it besides it being reported stolen and recovered. Nothing about major engine problems.

So should I go raise hell at the Honda dealership because I was sold a truck that said it had a warranty but didn't? Is there anything else I should do or can do? I wouldn't have bought the truck if there wasn't a warranty or I knew there were major engine repairs. Could there be a completely different engine in it with an unknown amount of miles because they ran it dry?

The service manager said it would be like a $300-400 fix if it's what he thinks it is by the symptoms I told him, which is replacing all plugs. I can do that myself and The money isn't the issue. I took it in because I thought it was under warranty and I didn't want to risk voiding it by doing it myself, plus what I've read on other forums, it might not be the plugs at all.

Now it's just the principal of the fact that I was basically mislead. I'm not sure if the Honda dealership could really verify the original warranty was still valid when they took in for trade.

i'd go look at your sales paperwork and hope that it says warranty included. if it does, have the ford dealer provide proof of when the warranty was cancelled. if they canceled it before the truck was sold to you, i'd be giving the honda dealer a call....

I'm going to go back and look through everything when I get home, but I just called the dealership back and asked if they could pull the info back up and see if it had a date it was canceled and he said he didn't see a date on there. He told me to call Ford Customer Service so I did and again they couldn't find a date it was canceled. The guy at Ford Cust Service said something about when warranties are canceled it usually goes through the NHTSB or DMV? which doesn't sound right to me..

Take it to another ford dealer and see what they say.

ASk the current dealer to show you the OASIS report where its flagged the powertrain warranty is no longer valid.

The service manager showed me his computer screen where it said it. I called the Ford Customer Service line again and talked to someone else and they found the date it was canceled. It was canceled in Aug of 2013, 3 months after the original owner bought the truck.

I did find all my paperwork and these are the two things I found

This one is on the long form that has all the prices written out and everything, so I'm not sure if it means anything in my case.

So if the engine was 'screwed up' did the oil change place pay Ford to install a new engine?

Not sure. The service manager just said that it was ran without oil and screwed the engine up and that's why the warranty was cancelled. He didnt say anything about a new engine, but I don't know what running a truck without oil can do and if it was ran long enough to mess an engine up enough that it needs replaced.
In my OP I was just asking how can I know if the original engine is in my truck and not some engine with 60k miles.
After telling him I knew the truck was in Missouri he said yeah that's where the paper work said the problem happened.

Potential causes of against the dealership that sold you the car could be negligent misrepresentation and fraud in the inducement,

Either dump the truck immediately or consider talking to an attorney to right the wrongs with the selling dealership.

My guess is the Honda dealership just assumed it had a warranty, and never checked. In the game of "hot potato" they were holding the potato when time ran out. Sucks to be them.

They should either buy the pickup back, or pay to fix the pickup, and buy you an aftermarket warranty equal to the promised factory warranty.

I know at places like Firestone, when they have an 'oil out' , it gets towed to the dealer for a new engine. Theres no work done at the store, no used engines. Only new/rebuilt.

The reason? Because it makes it 'clean' for them. Because what happens 4 months down the road if an ABS sensor fails. "Oh it must be from when firestone put that junkyard engine in my car..."

i would start i think by having a conversation with the manager at the honda dealer. you're probably not going to get anywhere, however maybe if you explain (calmly but firmly) your situation you may be able to convince them that providing you an extended warranty at their cost is appropriate.

but if they balk or tell you to pound sand, i'd take The Wonderer's advice.

Update: So I've done my research on this truck. Basically, Kid gets it down here May 2013 brand new, takes it to school at Mizzou, Aug 2013 takes it to ford dealership in Buckner, Mo because oil light. Called the dealership to ask for records and was supplied.

This Ladies and Gents was why the Powertrain Warranty was cancelled.

Not suprised to see. Also, just over 3,000 miles when it happened. Who the hell buys a new vehicle and then allows Jiffy Lube to get near it???

Nothing to add here but sure hope op gets it resolved to his satisfaction. That sucks. Bad.

For me, I go to Honda and they give me everything back that I paid and the transaction is undone completely. That's the only non negotiable solution for me before I pick up a lawyer and prepare for legal action.

so to defend the Honda dealer (slightly), they are only going to have access to Autocheck/CarFax to see the history of the car, same as you and me. I am assuming the photos above are from Ford OASIS or some such, so likely the Honda dealer had no knowledge of this stuff nor had any access to get it. Probably bought it from an auction and assumed all was fine... oil change, detail, front line ready. That is why I shy away from non-OEM auction buys at a dealer lot, not because they are inherently bad cars, but because they get no real attention from a dealer service drive.

If the Ford dealer replaced the engine, is there no warranty on the new engine?

Anything I could not certify from my OEM I would sell as AS IS NO WARRANTY. Sucks for that Honda dealer to have checked the WARRANTY box on the Monroney label, that will likley get you what you are after from the Honda dealer.

The truck wasn't bought from auction. According to the car fax the original owners traded it in to the Honda dealership. I believe to hide the issues because the Honda dealership is literally .5mile down the feeder road from the Ford dealership they bought the truck from. So to me it looks like the original owners were shady af.

Speaking of carfax, why didn't the dealership who put the new engine in report it to them? Most dealerships report oil changes.

Also, if Ford didnt warranty the work because of the bad oil change, why would they warranty a new engine? And if it did have a warranty wouldn't that warranty still show up in Ford's database.

Contact the dealer that did the work.

If it was a Ford rebuilt or new engine it should have had a warranty on it.

This is why I always change my own oil. I don't trust anyone to do it right. People think I'm crazy for doing it "because it's cheaper to take it in." I don't care...I'd rather know exactly what is going into my engine. Good luck, OP.
