Considering a used X5 and trying to compare and contrast the 3.5 and the 5 liter engines. Anyone with experience or knowledge on it?

What year, because I don't recall the x5 having a 3.5L or 5L available. The last two generations are either the 3L or the 4.4L with twin turbos or the diesel

The 3.0L N55 (engine in the _35 cars) is more reliable than the 4.4L N63 (engine in the _50 cars) in my opinion.

The N63 is more powerful and much more fun. It'll make the heavy 750i get up and go. That said, maintenance is expensive and a ***** to DIY and the mileage is what you expect of a twin turbo'd V8.

The N63 is also the subject of a potential class action lawsuit against BMW for its over consumption of oil.

Unless you enjoy wrenching, make sure whatever you buy is in warranty and dump it before the warranty expires.

The N55 is not an angel either, so if you're basing your decision exclusive on reliability I would say it's a wash between the two.

And I'm thinking the N63tu, the Gen2 they put in the X5 starting roughly in '13, maybe solved those issues. Pretty sure the oil consumption was pre-13 N63 models. /could be wrong, I would investigate further!

I would do the bigger of the two since BMW's turber I6 have been a perpetual headache since they were released.

The N55 has a much better reputation on BMW forums than the N63.

Two BMW indy mechanics I know recommend avoiding the V8's. I tested an X5 diesel many months ago and really liked it, but haven't moved into research & buying mode yet...

Go diesel or the 3.0. Avoid v8 bmws. Have an 08 x5 3.0 and and an 08 550 m sport. Love both, but you really don't want a v8 bummer unless willing to Pour&$$$$$$ into it.

We have a CPO X5 diesel and we love it. Drives great and we get somewhere around 25 mpg with it. Find one with the comfort seat option if you can.
