I'm pretty sure I'm going with 15% all around and am hoping the cops won't harass me about it. I haven't run a front plate in the last 8 years and have never been stopped over it *knocks on wood* so I'm hoping the popo treat tint the same.

It got me thinking about the Inspection and with the new way they do inspections, you no longer get an inspection sticker and only have to have the inspection on file when you renew your registration. If you get a vanity license plate in Texas, you get a 3 or 5 year registration with it and don't have to renew every year.

Wouldn't this solve the tint inspection issue since there is no reason to get an inspection if you don't have to register the car annually? Am I missing something?

1. Roll front windows down
2. Pull the window fuse
3. Get inspected

You don't have to have front windows to pass inspection. Maybe your $120k BMW doesn't have windows.

what are you doing when the 3 or 5 year inspection hits?

I rarely keep my cars for much more than 3 years and definitely not more than 5. It's somebody else's problem then.

pretty sure you don't have to have doors either... I'll try to get my wrangler inspected without the doors next year and see how it goes.

I had my old wrangler pass inspection with no doors or side view mirrors.

This is what I do. Once they asked me when I came in and forgot "it's a beautiful day sure you don't wanna take a ride around the block with the windows down?"

Wait, you spent that much money on a car that you will keep for five years...max?!

Never had an issue with inspections and tint.

12% on my front windows along with 5% around rear windows. DA PUBLICAN has 15% fronts and 5% rear.

No need to be a DBag. Cars are a fun hobby for me and I like driving different cars every few years. Living expenses, savings and retirement come first always. After that, I don't see why using my extra funds for something I enjoy makes me a fool. Different strokes for different folks. You only live once.

The plate, while good for 3-5, still requires registration to be renewed every year (after the 2 year new of course).

Worked for me every year since they changed the tint law and my windows suddenly went from legal to illegal.

Really? I have a buddy that got a 3 year plate and they gave him 3 full years of registration at the time. Maybe somebody made a mistake.

My old roommate is like this. Dude is single, makes great money, and loves cars. He got his job right after I got married, so about 5 years ago, and since then, this has been his stable of cars:

M5
911 GTS
911 Turbo S
C63 AMG
F-150 - old daily
5-series - current daily

He's also been looking at getting a Ferrari or SLS AMG

It's his hobby. He doesn't jet set the world and doesn't have kids that need things. He takes care of his bills and savings, then has fun with cars. I'd love to be able to do that, but it will be several years before I could possibly do something near what he's getting to do while he's young enough to enjoy them. Until then, I'll live vicariously through him (he does the same through me for the family) and I'll enjoy the hell out of the cars when I drive them. Honestly, I'm happy for him that he's able to do it.

Texas used to allow up to 3 year long registration periods because the yearly inspection was a separate sticker. When Texas went to the one stick, the did away with multi-year registrations.

I don't know where the idea that "I don't like people spending more money than me," came from, but it has nothing to do with that.

I simply don't understand it. In a very literal sense.

I have a different view of money than most people on this board. It's just how I was brought up. Don't waste.

I sometimes feel guilty sometimes with the minuscule things I waste money on.

The only financial reason I bought my Boss 302 LS is because it has the possibility to appreciate in value over time. If it had been just any other Mustang, I probably would not have purchased even though I had wanted a Mustang since I was 14. I could have bought one at any other time in the past, but I waited 22 years to find one that fit my requirements.

Maybe I did overdo it. I was in a really pissy mood last night, sorry, but it really just boils down to me not understanding throwing money out the window.

It comes down to everybody has something they can spend money on that others won't understand. For me, it's watches. I can spend $2k on a watch and not think anything of it, but I go through several worse case scenarios about how the $20 for a t-shirt I want could be better spent and how I'll probably lose my house if I buy that shirt.

Who's done anything like that? I've read this thread and I haven't seen anything posted that would lead me to this particular conclusion.

You can get a multi-year (read: 2 year) registration when you buy a new car, since the inspection is valid for 2 years.

But yeah, no more multi-year registration.

Umm, keeping a brand new car costing that much for only 3-5 years means a great deal of money lost to depreciation. That's where I see the waste.

I do, but the things I have purchase for them are very targeted and specific/functional. I purchase them to last so as to not have to buy more in the future.

What good is having money if you can't enjoy it? Would it be different if the OP took European vacations a couple times per year?

I have antique vehicle plates (truck is more than 25 years old). I got them before the law change but the deal with them is it is a 5 year registration. Haven't thought about it till this thread but I don't think I need a yearly inspection for it. It also has no doors or side mirrors, no problem with inspection.

As for tint. I'm 5% all the way around and get inspected regularly, no fuse trick (although I did use that trick back in high school with spotty success). I wouldn't recommend darker than 15% on the fronts, I pretty much have to roll my front windows down at night to see anything that is not right in front of me.

Good to know. Damn, so much for my loophole.

I guess I'll have to go with the "windowless" M5.
