The CPO thread reminded me, I'm a few K away from my Texag recommended TDI being out of factory warranty. I'm not big on extended warranties and can do a lot of work myself, but it is a German diesel and it is tuned and I drive it like I stole it (which I did for $13,900, thanks Dieselgate).

Would you buy an extended warranty? If so, where should I buy it?

Fuel system is biggest killer on the diesels. Have you been maintaining it?

Have a manual or auto?

VW should come with a 200k bumper to bumper warranty. Ugh

Manual. I've only had it for 3 months. But it has 28k so it is time to do the 25-30k mile service, which the fuel filter is part of.

Didn't know the miles were that low. Honestly as long as you stay on top of the maintenance I wouldn't worry about it. Put that money in a piggy bank.

Won't they deny coverage because of the tune?

Fuel system has a warranty extension up to 120k. Biggest concern I would have is the a/c compressor.

Been helping a lot at buddy's shop where he's been getting sh/t ton of TDIs to work on. Other than the "pump deuce", not a single fuel issue. And we're talking 150k+ on most of these. The pump deuce needs at least one injector ($800). I changed out the rail, the pump and a bunch of other crap already. Still has a bad miss on one injector.

Most of the others get general maintenance and then DPF/EGR delete, tune, exhaust.

I have an OBDII tuner with the stock file on it. It will go back to the dealership stock.

25K is just barely broken in on TDI.

Will anyone even sell an extended warranty on one until the legal issues are settled?

Get on this guy's list for his HPFP fixes (he's very backordered). While his fixes should improve reliability of the high-pressure fuel pump, the more important thing is that the pump fails, you only need to replace the pump (and filters), not the entire fuel system (fuel rail, injectors, etc.).

There is no fuel rail on the PD engine except the one built-in to the cylinder head. The unit injectors are driven off the camshaft, which may be your problem here -- PD cams aren't always the greatest, especially if you haven't always used the proper 5w40 oil (yes, the dealer Castrol 5w30 oil technically meets 505.01 spec... but people don't like it as much). PD Injectors should also cost half that price, although labor is a bit involved and requires some special tools.

You're right...what I changed out was the injector harness not a fuel rail, though I thought it was some sort of rail. Plastic with wiring and connections for the injectors. My bad. Wasn't that bad to change out, save for the little metal tabs that you have to depress to get it through the holes.

The cam is brand new, buddy had changed that. Owner bought injectors and shipped them. Not here yet, though.

Ran out of spec Mobil 1 0-w40 for 140k in mine (182k total miles) with no cam issues. Also depends on quality of oil vs being the exact spec. The rest of the car had MAJOR issues along the way.

The CR TDI engines have been solid, from what I've researched.

If you're not deleted, you will inevitably have to contend with 1) probably clogged DPF and 2) carbon-filled intake manifold not allowing the intake flapper to close. At that point, you can pay to replace the dpf or delete it along with the EGR, and it's a good time to replace the intake manifold since you want to start fresh with no more EGR to contend with. You'll start seeing these problems around 100k miles, give or take 20k.

Your AC might start to act up, and it's likely a Refrigerant Control Valve that you can replace yourself for ~$80 plus the cost of R134a drain and charge.

Timing belt at 120k, oil changes every 5-10k, and HPFP filter every 20k are the major maintenance items. If you buy a VAGCOM, you can do the latter yourself since you'll be able to prime the system via the interface.

Ive seen write ups online where people just fill the filter with fuel and let the car prime itself without a vagcom. But I've been wanting to get one anyway.

I was about to order all of the parts for oil change and fuel filter from Amazon, but I just figured out that 30k maintenance is included for free on the 2013 and transfers owners. So that is nice.
