VW CC transmission issue

I have a 2010 VW CC with 93,500 miles on it. Yesterday, I tried to go from drive to reverse and the "R" in the dash started blinking and the car acted as if it was in neutral. I turned the car off and back on and had no trouble shifting into drive and it drove home just fine. A few hours later, I started the car and had a check engine light on. Took it to Autozone for a diagnostic and the code is P2711 "Unexpected Mechanical Gear Disengagement". Some searches on forums say either bad clutch pads or mechatronic unit, with the later being quite an expensive job. I'm planning to call VW dealership in the morning as well as Das Autohaus in Houston. Anyone have any experience with this?

T&P

All kidding aside, how has the car treated you? My wife drives a 2012 CC R-Line. We bought it used with about 37k miles. It was a leased unit.

I love driving the car and how comfortable it is. This will be my second real issue with it. The first was a carbon build up on the intake valves which is basically unavoidable with the 2.0 engine. That was $500 at a VW specialist in Houston (Das Autohaus), and the dealer quoted if for $800. They say to expect to do this every 60-70k miles depending on driving habits.

But I really do like driving the car and am hopeful this ends up not being a major transmission issue so I can avoid any major expenses.

This is going to sound crazy, but...

This rig AWD? These cars are finnicky as hell and if the tire pressures or tire wear are uneven the tranny will go haywire.

My treg has been acting terrible. I took it to a VW transmissions speicialist and the guy takes down all the tire pressures and refills them to spec...all is well in dbtexasag05 town!

Also try a transmission reset:

Get in the vehicle and turn the key on (do not start the engine). Press the gas pedal to the floor of the vehicle for 10-15 seconds.

Turn the power to the vehicle off, open the door, close the door, and arm the vehicle with the fob.

Restart the vehicle and now the vehicle is reset. These transmissions learn how you drive and if you started driving differently maybe it made it a little wonky.

I've read about the carbon buildup as well. I've been hearing that the GTIs haven't had much trouble because most are driven hard. That's why I've been telling my wife to take the tollway to work 2-3 times per week on Sports mode. Hopefully, that helps. Good luck with your car.

Actually, I've heard that the new VW engines avoid carbon build-up by having a hybrid combustion and the traditional fuel injection washes away some of the deposits.

Most likely the mechatronic is faulty.

The Golf R is the only gas EA888 engine sold in the US with dual injection.

Thanks for the comments. I did try the transmission reboot to no avail. I called Das Autohaus this morning and will be taking it in this afternoon. They said it could be a couple of different issues with the two most common being the Clutch Pads or Mechatronic Unit, both of which I'm sure will not be cheap. I will keep the board posted in case anyone runs across this in the future.

Also, FWD.

Only Euro engines have both direct and port injection. (aka "multi-point injection")

As to direct injection and dirty valves, if you run methanol injection, it keeps everything nice and clean. Saw my valves at about 80k and they looked pretty yummy.

This.

It will be cheaper to swap in a 02Q 6 speed manual.

Just heard back from the mechanic, bad clutch pads that need to be replaced which means the transmission has to come out so the quote is $2,500. $1,050 in parts and $1,320 in labor with tax and fees bringing it to $2,500.

Yikes, that sucks.

Is that cheaper than replacing the mechatronic gearbox?

I actually think the pricing is pretty similar as the clutch pads are a lot of labor costs and the mechatronic is a more expensive part. I was hoping clutch pads would be cheaper but they are very labor intensive. Hopefully your wife's CC avoids this one!

Is this something that changing the DSG fluid can help avoid?

I'm not sure. I wasn't the best about having my DSG serviced regularly, but I had just had it serviced 3,000 miles before this issue came up. Based on things I have read on VW forums, this has happened to people before they even hit their first DSG service (40k miles). I think its just one of the gifts of the DSG.

Revive!!

This just happened to me while driving my son's 2009 GLI.

Shifted to reverse in the driveway. Dashboard lights start flashing and car is in netural. Turned vehicle off and restarted. No issue.

I am trying figure out the most cost effective way to fix the issue. Is it fixable for a father and son team?

If you have decent knowledge, and a good supply of tools, sure. A lift would make it easier.

So, mechatronic issue? Quick google search leads me to that conclusion.

Cost of parts? Labor at a non dealer shop?

There is also some indication that a software flash can fix the issue.
