Been through several drain pans and it seems like the the cap where you empty it is either leaking or breaks too easily when I tighten it.

Also do I have to drain each type of fluid into a separate pan? I.e. oil on one, coolant in another, tranny in another? I usually dump what is in the drain pan into old 5qt oil jugs to take to auto parts store.

I use the same 5 gallon pan for everything. The cap is a POS so I have to be really careful

The black poly pans are what i use. You can screw antifreeze bottle caps on them

We just toss it in the bed of the truck and take it to the recycle place.

The Caps all suck.

When I get done changing oil, the waste oil goes directly into an industrial 5 gallon container until I have time to drop it off at Oreilly or Walmart Etc.

I dont worry about mixing engine oil, ATF, Brake Fluid etc.

I do have a separate bucket for coolant.

Heres what I drain my pans into

This rectangular pan works well, drains well, and cleans up well. The corner drain really works better than most other drains, it's just shaped better than most and allows you to drain the pan pretty quick without a bunch spilling over the sides.

When I'm done it gets drained into this jug and get's drained at the parts store once every couple of oil changes.

I use a long transmission funnel to get it in this container from the pan.

I agree, I do not separate oil, gear oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, etc, but coolant would go in a separate container.

I've tried many of the nifty drain, contain, transport, dump, all-in one pans mentioned, and like everyone says the caps that keep the oil contained while you store / transport the fluid do not last more than a couple of oil changes at best.

I have an open top pan... Drain the fluid, tighten drian plug bolt back, pour in new fluid, use the new fluids container to pour the old into and dump it in the container at O'Reilly (etc).

I've been using this with a funnel and have had good results. Transporting is much easier!

I've had a hard time finding anyone to take coolant. Luckily ethylene glycol isn't a regulated waste so it's legal to pour down the drain.
Where do you live? Don't pour it down the drain please!

Depends on what drain you're talking about. The sewer drain? Not good! The toilet? Maybe, if you're not on septic... "Flush antifreeze down the toilet or sink with plenty of water if your house connects to a sanitary sewer system. The sewage treatment plant will break down hazardous chemicals in antifreeze. " Best to search and see what is legal/acceptable in your area.

Story I've told on here before:

quote:
Funny story, I had about six gallons of coolant to dispose of a couple of years ago:

- Tried Walmart, autozone, no luck.

- Checked the city website, struck out again.

- Called the fire department, they told me I had to go to the Water Treatment facility.

- Went to the Water Treatment facility, they sent me to the Waste Water Treatment facility.

- Went to the Waste Water Treatment facility, they ended up calling around and figured out that it was actually back at a building next door to the Water Treatment facility.

- Went back to said building. Spoke to the City Engineer, who told me to dispose of it in a used oil receptacle. He told me they just pump coolant out of the receptacle first and then pump out the oil.

- Drove to the receptacle, where it says "no antifreeze" in huge letters. Said $&%# it and dumped the coolant in the receptacle.

- Had to change my coolant again after all the miles and time I spent trying to dispose of it properly.

Put a half gallon in your car with every fillup. Will be gone soon. Or put it in a metal can in your backyard, throw match.

So the farm equipment uses 5.5 gallons per oil change. I have an old 500 gallon tank. When it gets full of waste oil, I call the same company that garages use, and they come pump it out. They used to do it for free, I think there was a small fee last time.

They have told me no antifreeze. If there is antifreeze in the tank, they will not take the oil.

Your milage may vary.

Just bought one of these over the weekend. It's so much easier than dealing with a large drain pan or placing the oil back into the original containers.

or just spill it on the ground and it'll flash away

I think the city has its own pump truck to pull it out. I thought it was odd, but there was no other place to dispose of it according to the city.

Last time I took old oil to auto zone they made me go to the back with the buy while he dumped it to make sure there was no antifreeze in there. Guess the two don't mix and can they can tell real easily or something?

I would have thought it would just separate and go to the bottom, but apparently not.

And Googling seems to indicate that antifreeze can accumulate heavy metals (lead, chromium, zinc) and thus is a hazardous waste.

Both Firestone and Goodyear take used coolant for free.

Thanks for the tip. I ended up doing my truck and this was easier since it's close to my house
