Wrapping / painting a semi trailer

Howdy all!

I am a member of the College Station High band boosters. The band has grown and using two-three smaller trucks to haul our instruments, props, and gear to shows is getting logistically and economically more difficult, so we are working on getting a semi trailer to use as our instrument truck.

Educate me on options and costs for painting/wrapping a truck like this. We have heard the wraps look great but only last a few years, and then have to be re-done at increasing costs every time (due to removal of the old wrap first.) Obviously cost is a factor as we would rather spend money on instruments etc.

Also, who does this in the BCS area? Or maybe it would be worth taking it somewhere reasonably close if we could get a better deal. Any ideas on advertisement in exchange for partial or complete donation would certainly be considered! :-)

Thanks in advance!

LS swap in the tractor/truck that is pulling this trailer?

And sorry OP. I have nothing for you on this one.

I don't frequent this board so the inside jokes are over my head. What's LS swap?

Swapping out whatever engine is in a vehicle with a Chevy LS motor. Aka the Silvy Special.

Why even bother painting it? Does it have Callahan Auto Parts stenciled on the side or something.

It will have a commercial logo and paint job, yes. It will have to be painted or wrapped at some point.

id call utility trailer in Houston and ask them for a ballpark on a repaint. They might be able to help you out with the wrap.

Another idea would be to call houston ideallease or any of the big truck leasing companies (pac-lease, ryder, etc) and see if they can give you an idea or provide recommendations on who to call.

Wrapping a 40' trailer in vinyl is not going to be very cheap

This.

My buddy did his GTI and the vinyl alone was $2k. It was fancy schmancy metallic flake styled vinyl, but nonetheless a MUCH smaller hooride than a gigantorTruck.

Basically...

Call Tiffany @ CC Creations.
They do vehicle wraps.
She can get you a quote.

Automotive vinyl should have a 5-7 year outdoor life if printed and installed properly.

As Rob said, it aint cheap, even the plain white. I think the last roll of we bought for our sign shop was over 400 for a 30" wide, 100 yd roll. About twice the normal vinyl we buy is.

Call Dave or Brooke at Sign Pro in Bryan, I worked there in college. We did the 12th Man hummer wrap, state farm wrap and a host of others.

Why waste the money trying to make it look cool? Didn't the op say it was for band?

Looking forward to the day that this fad dies for "marching" bands.

Our band did a paint job/graphics wrap on a new 53' trailer a couple of years ago and everyone says it was around $15K.

And the smaller trucks never go away, we use the 53' mostly for tubas, battery, and pit and still use TWO 26' Penske rentals for props (I really wish the prop fad would die, seems like a total waste of time and money to me)

I watched a show with a theme of "Spartacus". It included the drum major being pulled on the field by two band members in a "chariot" made of a 55 gallon drum. I was trying hard not to giggle, but I lost it when the clueless announcer called the show "Sporadic-cus".

I stage-whispered to my wife "That must have been the less-dependable younger brother of Spartacus."

I'm an old BQ, so I'm no fan of the amoeba band stuff. And I don't like the flag girls, the huge percussion section on the sideline, and the props.

I realize I'm just a grumpy old fart, yelling at clouds, and I realize a lot of folks like that crap. But as your OP shows, it is getting waaaayyyyyyy out of hand.

Fair enough, BQ. My high school band went to state marching contest several times, and I also was in the Aggie Band so I have a great love for 8 to 5 and 6 to 5 both. Now that I have a 9th grader in high school band and a 7th grader coming right up behind her, I've re-discovered my love for DCI and show bands. But the Noble Men of Kyle will always be my favorite band.

I could do without all the props but unfortunately that horse has left the barn. To compete, especially on a state-wide level, that's what it takes these days. If you really want to see some ridiculous stuff look at some DCI shows on YouTube. High school hasn't gotten to that level yet, but search for Claudia Taylor Johnson 2015 or Tarpon Springs 2015 on YouTube and you'll see that it's not far behind.

The most important thing is the tremendous experience it is for the kids - working hard towards a common goal and being a part of something good or great... which you understand all too well as a former BQ. I'm happy to do whatever I can to help them and be a part of that.

So yeah i gotta figure out how to get this damn trailer wrapped..... :-)

P.S. Sorry for the hijack, automotive board ... will shut up now.

Hey I realize that "that's the way it is now". And my kids were in DCI/show band, because that was the only option. I supported my kids, I'm glad you support yours.

I don't have to like it, though.

Tailgate, have you thought about (or whatever "Board" might be tasked with thinking about) a GoFundMe effort to help defray the costs, even if only a tad?

Tailgate88

No prob Canyon, I get it.

Rob, that was discussed in our boosters meeting, but I think the fees were 8% or so. I would not expect this to be something that people who were geographically distant from our school/district would want to pitch in on, so we are going to focus our fundraising efforts to the local community/school.

I actually just talked with the band director this morning, and the deal has been cut for the trailer. Now we just have to raise the money to decorate and I think after researching the cost of wraps, we are going to just paint it black and go the vinyl decal route. Hopefully CC Creations or someone will give us a good deal on those. (We do buy a lot of t-shirts from them after all... )

Before you look at painting it, be sure you have somebody that can move it.
