Not mine, friend of a friend. The above car with pushbutton start. Won't start, getting an intermeittent message that car does not recognize key fob. Same with both fobs. Did manage to get it started, battery seemed okay, alternator charging. Took it to dealer.

Dealer response: You need a new battery. For $199. Friend is currently going to dealer with friend of friend, will be pulling battery off, taking to auto parts store, and getting it tested. Will also put new battery in key fobs.

Key fob doesn't seem likely, though I guess it's not impossible for both fob batteries to be bad.

Car battery doesn't seem likely, but perhaps low voltage could cause a problem like this, maybe?

Oh, and dealer at first said "Problem is battery". Then changed story to "Battery is bad, thus, we could not run diagnostics". I guess there were no spare batteries or battery chargers in shop.

Any other suggestion, other than don't go to a dealer?

1. Swap the battery out with a good one.

2. Get in the car, close all the doors

3. Pull the physical blade from the remote fob, push ignition button 2X (no foot on the brake). This will but the car in the 'run' position.

4. Step out of the car, close the door, but the key blade into the driver door handle lock cylinder, and turn the key to lock, then unlock.

5. Get back in the car, push the ignition button again to turn the car off.

6. Try to start it.

7. If that doesnt work, wait until the moon is in the Seventh House, And Jupiter aligns with Mars, Then peace will guide the planets, And love will steer the stars, flash the high beams 4 times and walk around the car counter clock wise 3 times and sacrifice a chicken and pour the blood on the hood of the car.

Omg, this made me laugh!

The sad thing is the 7th item is about as likely to work as 1-6.

I can't say if it is true in this case but when my battery died in my 2009 altima it behaved similar to this.

Turned out battery was bad, everything now works. Dealer did not charge for diagnostics, after all.

If the keys somehow become de-programmed, yes.
