If the maintenance manual says change plugs at 60,000, that's what I do. If it says change the oil at 7,500, that's what I do. People think I'm crazy and today's mindset for car maintenance is to perform oil changes and otherwise drive it until something breaks.

Here I am at the dealership to have them drain and fill my "lifetime" CVT fluid. Apparently it doesn't ever need to be changed. Kinda like how Audi's old V8 S4 never needed a timing chain service right? Why do people think I'm crazy for doing some preventive maintenance on a non-serviceable $6000 transmission? It's interesting that the manual says to drain and fill every 30,000 miles for extreme conditions...

If you were really OCD wouldn't you do this service yourself? You wouldn't trust SOMEONE ELSE TO TOUCH YOUR CAR.

Trust me, I would. I lose $50 doing it myself and it requires the trans fluid to be at a certain temp.

If you have any auto with direct injection, I highly recommend that you change oil much more often than is specified. There are also some maintenance things not required that should be strongly considered. Without port injection, lots of DI engines are getting some carbon buildup behind the intake valves. Products and procedures are now available to perform on a maintenance schedule to prevent the longer term harmful effects.

I used to work at autozone, and I noticed something I thought was interesting about people. You have the people that are super OCD about their vehicles, they change the oil at the exact mile, etc. Those people put hundreds of thousands of miles on the car, no problem. Then there are the people who are 30,000 miles over an oil change, have 200,000 miles on their brakes, and don't know what coolant is. Somehow, their cars work just fine. Then there are the poor people like myself who might go a few hundred over an oil change, drive around with the brakes making noise for a month before I change them. The everyday man. We seem to be the ones who have all the maintenance issues. Just speaking generally, of course.

A monthly hooning session with the go pedal will help clean some of that build up. I've been doing that with my GLI. Mmmm... German boooost.

So how long have you been paying them to hide your car for a few hours before returning it?

You follow the manual to the letter when it comes to preventative maintenance but you're having them change the transmission fluid it says not to change?
