Hey,

might buy a jeep up here in vermont, and register it in Texas. went to the website, and it assumes that you and the vehicle are now in Texas. I will not be back for another two years, if then. The website said it must be inspected BEFORE registering it. I dont remember getting any document saying it passed inspection when i lived in Texas, only the sticker in the windshield. I know i will have to send the title, bill of sale, and the tax payment along with any other fees. I dont want to pay for an inspection up here, when it isnt necessary if its registered in Texas. I have done this with new cars before, and the out of state dealership took care of everything, but this will be done by me. Reason i want it registered in Texas is because the inspections up here are borderline criminal, and costly. Plus i dont want that effing vermont license plate on my vehicle. any advice?

You're going to have to bring the vehicle to Texas to get a Texas inspection sticker. When you get the Texas inspection, you will need to request a "green sheet" which costs $1 and is filled out bu the inspector. This is what you take to the county tax office to prove your out of state vehicle passed inspection in Texas.

Some states (Wyoming in my experience) will not allow you to drive a vehicle registered in another state for more than 2 days. They require you purchase a temporary vehicle registration or register the vehicle the state it is driven.

Do you live in Vermont? Texas will not let you register a vehicle in the state if you are not permanently domiciled here.

Ag in Jax, I am active military stationed in vermont, and Texas is my home of record. My last two vehicles were purchased new in louisiana, and the dealerships were able to register them in Texas, and they had an LA inspection. Well furk, inspections up here are a huge pain in the ass. I think its a conspiracy to stimulate the local economy up here by making (or trying to make you) you replace things that arent worn out. I have already had trouble with two separate shops when we went to get my daughters vehicle (purchased up here) inspected.

I don't condone it, but a lot of people, who have probably never even been to Montana, register their vehicles in Montana for tax avoidance purposes. It might work for inspection avoidance as well.

TexAg, new hampshire doesnt make you pay a tax on vehicle purchases either, and their inspections are pretty easy compared to vermont, but you must have an address in new hampshire to do it. well, its a YJ jeep, so most everything is easy to fix/replace if necessary.

on my daughters blazer, the first shop said it needed wheel bearings, so i went and bought them and replaced them. the original shop was closed when we went to get it reinspected so we went to another shop. guess what they said needed inspected? you guessed it, wheel bearings. i showed them the receipt for the bearings and threatened to report them to the DMV, and they all of a sudden decided it was good to go. bunch of shysters up here.
