Looking at higher mileage 4Runners & Sequoias. I want to know if anyone has opinions on which is a better engine / vehicle. I know they both need timing belt / chain replacement around 100K miles. The only other maintenance I can see are plugs which need to be replaced every 30K miles for the V6 and at 100K for the V8. I want to be able to do all the routine maintenance myself.

Towing? That 4.0 does have some decent power. My brother has a tacoma with one, and we have towed a 6000lb trailer with it.

Towing would be a plus but certainly not a necessity.

The early 2000s V6s were plagued with the Toyota oil sludge issues. If the oil was changed regularly, shouldn't be a problem.

The 4.7 has not had a lot of problems - but as it debuted in its original form as the 1UZ-FE in '90, Toyota had a long time to refine it.

Never driven the 4.0.

The 4.7 is quite torquey and is rock solid.

Probably just have to find and drive one of each, see if you really need the V8.

If you do not have EVERY single receipt for the oil changes on the V6, Toyota won't warranty the engine for sludge issues. The 4.7 is a pretty decent engine, and really doesn't give up much mpgs in the real world to the V6.

So, I don't think that the 4.0 has had sludge issues (the 3.4 did). The 4.0 has a timing chain, that to my knowledge, does not require service while the 4.7 has a belt that does require replacement at roughly 100k miles. It's kind of a pain in the buns and usually you replace the water pump at the same time since it has to be removed to access the timing belt.

For the sequoia, the 4.7 is your only choice, an for the 4runner, the 4.0 is the better choice IMHO.

Thanks for the replies.

4.0 has a chain and I have seen them run 250-300k problem free with proper oil changes.
Changing the oil on them is super easy with the filter mounted up top.

Have no experience with the v8.

Where are you located at chopper ?

I may have a 2007 4runner 4.0 coming up for sale. It is one owner bought by my wife new and has had mobil 1 synthetic in it every 5,000 miles since new.

You can reach me at

Comparable mileage, go for the V8...

JP - Seems like you'd be asking a bit more than I'm interested in paying right now. Looking to keep it around $10-12K if possible.

Leaning toward a Sequoia that's had the belt & water pump replaced.

100% insane to consider an FJ with at least a year left on a rear facing child seat? I'm getting conflicting reports from other Toyota boards.

Both are good engines, but the v8 is much smoother. It's very reliable as well, but the American made ones in sequoias tundras and 4runners aren't quite what the landcruiser engines are.

Which parts are forged that are cast on the American made engines?
Oruc Reis
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The heads. They had to quit putting the trd supercharger on the tundra 4.7 because it kept shooting rods through the heads. The land cruiser 4.7 can run the supercharger no problem.
SpicewoodAg

But if not supercharged, it probably doesn't matter??
p_bubel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Sounds more like they effed up putting that supercharger on the Tundra.

How do you push connecting rods through the head?
Oruc Reis
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I misspoke, the connecting rods would bend in the Tundra engine because they are cast. The rods in the LC are forged.

Ahh, that makes sense.
