How long do you want to ignore this user?
I got a rental from Enterprise Location A as a replacement for getting my car fixed for an incident. I used it for a couple of days and returned to location B which was closer to body shop. Manager took car in and checked me out and I was on my way. Two weeks later I get a call that when I was planning on returning my rental?!? I told them to figure it out and find it, their job. Well being that more than a week had passed by I disposed of my return slip bc I thought I didn't need it anymore. Well now they wanna hold me liable for a car they took in and can't find. I have escalated this issue to the corporate offices. Waiting on their resolution. I have all the documents but my return slip which I wasn't able to find. Any recommendations or suggestions.

I would call the branch that you returned the car to and speak to the agent.

There has to be a history on the unit you rented.

Did they close or pend the contract when you dropped the car off?

Last time I got a car from enterprise the agent called me later that first day to have me check the license plate number for them. He was very honest that they had lost a car and were trying to track it down...

Did you schedule to return it to location B, or did you just pull a "hey that's an enterprise I'll just drop it off there".

There is a big difference between these two actions. Not to say that Enterprise shouldn't be able to find the car, but if your rental agreement didn't have the secondary location on it, prepare for a world of hurt.

yeah generally you can't just return it to a different location unless you plan that ahead of time in the agreement.

I called the day before and again the day I went to drop it off to confirm I was going to drop it off at location B.

1ags: I did go and talk to both "branch" managers the loc A who rented and confirmed me dropping off and loc B and the manager at loc B who took the car from me when dropping it off.

They tell me there is no paper trail and the car hasn't been rented out to anyone after I returned it. I even asked how they keep inventory of car and he said they count the number of keys they have and cars parked outside and don't keep a log of what cars were there

They left the keys in it and someone stole it. I'm sorry to say but you're hosed.

Had this happen to us with Avis returning it at the airport where we got it but we had the returned paperwork fortunately. Haven't used Avis since.

But at that point it's his fault. I got the location to get video of the cars leaving and entering. It has me driving into the location in the rental and away I'm my car. My thing is if he took the keys then it shouldn't be my responsibility, especially if the dumb shiat misplaced the keys after. He said they kept inventory of cars each day and if the car is missing then it should have been determined day 1. Once I speak with corporate and their area manager, they will have to figure it out. I think it's unacceptable for a company to realize two weeks later that they are missing a car. I feel like shiat for not keeping my receipt for longer but I think after calling my ins, telling the dealer and turning in the car this should not be my responsibility.

After this I will never use Enterprise.

We have a receipt box. Toss in, throw away next year filing system.

I can't believe they can't GPS track all their cars.

It seems impossible, in 2012, that a car rental company could LOSE a car. I mean, seriously...with all the computers and inventory databases...you have to have a HUGE case of "the dumbass".

Get the rental agreement and see what the means of returning the car are. If you satisfied those terms, and can testify to that under oath, you're fine. With or without the receipt (which is hearsay anyway -- it has to be "proved up"), your testimony is evidence. Without countering evidence, they have no case -- its just supposition on their part that you didn't return the car.

If they are insisting you are responsible, you need to get the police involved. There was almost certainly a crime committed -- a stolen car or criminal fraud.

You have no duty outside of what you are contractually obligated per the terms of the rental agreement. Unless the terms say, "you must get a receipt and keep it with you if questioned about the whereabouts of the vehicle..." I can't see a legally sufficient argument of them saying, "we don't have the car and its on you."

If it does rise to the level of them demanding payment, you need to get your insurance company involved. This could be construed (arguably) as negligence on your part which would kick in the liability portion of your policy. They might reserve their rights on accepting coverage, but at the very least, they'd provide you a defense (hire an attorney).

Something similar happened to me a few years back. I had left my rental car at my mechanics shop and called Enterprise to come and get it.

I received a call from them a couple of weeks later asking when I was planning on returning it. They then went and picked it up as they had forgotten it was there. Then they tried to stick me with a $1500 rental fee.

It took a couple of weeks but I was able to get the charges reversed. I had to escalate it to the district manager though.

I'm surprised you didn't get stuck with that bill. I can't imagine that 'hey, my car is at ABC Care Shop, come get it, thanks for loaning it' is the way they would have planned the return. Every time I have has a rental with my vehicle at a shop, you take the rental back to the rental company, sign it over, get the receipt, and in the case of Enterprise, they will drive you to said shop and leave you there to pick up your car. Did you just leave their car out front with the keys in it? Give the keys to a shop worker who is t an authorized renter of the car but now has free and unprecedented access to it? The fact you got out of that one without paying the $1,500 is amazing. You must be important yourself, or have serious connections.

It'd be nice to be important. I just had my paperwork and supporting information. The keys were left with the mechanic.

They'll usually come pick it up if you ask. However, that fiasco was a big headache so I have them drop me off now whenever possible.

The are still working on finding the vehicle, said that they are making sure it's not somewhere they forgot like a repair shop or a nearby enterprise. I've gotten a call from area, regional, and corporate managers apologizing. We will see, I honestly think they rented out the car and didn't do the paper correctly and it's not somewhere in town.

I guess they found the car or searched really hard for it. After I threatened to suit and filed a complain with the BBB, plus called there corporate office until someone higher than a customer service agent answered and told them what I would do if this came back to bite me in the ass. I have all my documentation saved as well as call logs and persons I talked to and footage of me driving the vehicle on the location.

One thing for sure, I will never rent from enterprise again.

Enterprise once called me about three days post return asking when I was returning. Um, 3 days ago. They said they'd look into it. Branch was near my office so I stopped by late that day. Girl admitted it had gone for an oil change and it took them forever to figure it out. ;
