4Runner comes in 3 flavors -- SR5, Trail, and Limited. I think the first two have 17" wheels (SR5 for sure) and the limited comes with 20". Not that I'm an intense off-roader, but will the 20" handle OK off road? This will be a 4x4.

Would love to hear from 4Runner owners, especially recent model ones, but anyone with an opinion or experience in this area can chime in. I think the F150, among other trucks, has similar wheel size choices.

Get the Trail.

I have trail and it is great off road. The 20" rims would not be good for off road use because the tire profile is thin - pinch flats.

I bought the trail and added factory leather and you really can't tell the difference inside. I also got 2.5" lift and bigger tires and still cheaper than limited. Still has nav system, sunroof, etc.

The problem is that the Limited has the equipment I want and only comes with 20s.

you should ask your question there. In reference to street fighter's "Refrain from posting smart ass Pirate comment."

What do you define as off roading and what size tires? 20" wheels = less side wall, that's the main downside.

Do NOT go and post on pirate.

What I'm thinking is to be able to do something like this in a pinch:

Perhaps not that steep a climb, but that terrain.

Not all the time. Not even that much. Just don't want to pay for 4wd and not be able to use it.

I have not owned or driven the current body style 4Runner. I did have a Ford F-250 with 20" factory wheels. The wheels would accumulate dust and mud inside the wheel which caused the wheels to be out of balance and vibrate badly at highway speeds. Several times, I had to stop at a DIY car wash to spray out the inside of the wheels. When I ordered my current GMC 2500, 20" wheels were standard and I special ordered it with 17" wheels. I have not had the same problems with the GMC 17" wheels, but that's not really an apples to apples comparison.

Your Toyota dealer should be able to exchange the wheels from a Trail model to the Limited model you desire if you think the 20" wheels will be a problem.

Your wheels are likely to get chewed up unless you run at least a 37" tire. I'd just aske them to put 17's on there, or by some after moarket wheels and sell the stock 20's to some cholo.

Are 20's better or worse for road driving, gas mileage, etc. or does it make a difference?

I hate the bling. I wish we were still in a 15 and 16" world, but it seems those are about history.

The 20's are probably a little bit heavier but I don't think you would notice a huge difference. I would think the stealership would probably downgrade your 20's to 17's for free so they could turn around and sell the 20's at MSRP to some schmuck that doesn't know any better.

If you plan on lots of offroading or if your wife(curb checker) has a set of keys I would get the 17's.

There are always a bunch of SR5 owners looking to trade. Look on the 4runner forums.

If your 4Runner is going to be a daily driver that makes a few deer lease trips and might hit a dirt road a dozen times a year, maybe have to slide through a muddy low spot, if you like the 20's you will be fine. If you are talking about off roading as in a hobby you do occasionally but on the rare occasions would be some more heavy duty stuff, don't go with the 20's.

I have 20's on my GMC Sierra, my dad has 20's on his KR F-250, brother has 20's on his KR F-150, FIL has 20's on his Sequoia, BIL has 20's on his Tundra. We all drive to deer leases and ranches fairly regularly and don't have any problems. We have trucks and Jeeps to drive on the property once we are there, but there can be some semi hairy spots from time to time getting into the property. None of us have ever had a problem.

Also, none of us have her done any serious off roading with our vehicles. If you are serious about off roading occasionally, but also like the looks of the 20's for the 95% of the time it is mall crawling, keep the 20's and buy a cheap set of steel rims with off road tires to out on it when you know you are going to be hitting a trail, then put your street tires back on it for the daily commute.

JRizzle, do you mind posting a pic or two of your 4runner with the lift?

I'll post one. Let me figure out how to do so. Never done it.

The good thing about mine, is that it looks normal - not obscene but has all the innards of the trail, an the inside is almost identical to limited.
