How much difference is there? Found 5-w40 for diesels but only 5-30 for gas.

Is it just marketing or what happens if you put gas oil in a diesel or vice versa? Would be nice not to have to keep multiple oils around for the trucks vs cars.

Here are the differences between diesel engine oil and gasoline engine oil. In a modern diesel engine there is substantial exhaust soot contamination that the engine oil must contend with. Diesel oil is designed with much higher levels of detergency and dispersency to fight the soot contamination. Like ZDDP anti-wear chemistry, detergents are a surface active chemistry and compete directly for space on metal surfaces, such as the cam lobe and lifter face. So, in practice, the effective level of Zinc anti-wear is a bit lower than what we expect it to be based solely on chemical analysis. Additionally, the ZDDP that is generally used in diesel formulas is primary ZDDP (which activates at higher engine temperatures) since a diesel engine runs predominantly at operating temperature. In a gasoline engine, we must have both primary and secondary ZDDP (which activates at lower temperatures) since the engine will experience a significant number of cold starts. Also, the viscosity modifier polymers that are used in multi-viscosity engine oil to prevent viscosity loss at operating temperature (to protect the bearings) are different for diesel oil and gasoline oil. Diesels operate at essentially the same rpm all day long and need polymers that are shear stable to protect the bearings. Gasoline engines experience many large ranges of rpm during operation and require polymers that have both shear stability and thickening efficiency capability to protect the bearings.

But in reality, if you use dual rated oil, it won't hurt anything. It's just a little thicker than most car oils, so you might see a slight MPG drop.

If it has a SL or SM rating on the back of the bottle, you can use it in your gas engine.

Not an answer to your question, but I think it's 15w40. I use it in my diesel benz's.

The API service label (starburst) can be found on the back of every bottle of oil that is worth a damn.

The service ratings are the type of engine for which they are rated. S for spark ignited (or gasoline) and C for compression ignited (or diesel) This letter is followed by a spec rating (version)

CD and CF are both for diesel, but the CF meets higher standards than the CD (ash content for instance)

Most synthetics I have seen meet both S and C criteria.

I think most of the "fully synthetic" diesel oils are 5W40, like Mobil Delvac 1 and Amzoil. I'm not as certain, but I think many of the synthetic blends or non-PAO synthetics are also 5W40, like synthetic Rotella and Delo.

You're right, it is 5w-40. I've been having trouble finding it. I'm actually running regular Rotella right now. Walmart has it sometimes but hasn't the last couple of times when I need to change oil. Autozone used to carry it but doesn't any more.

Thanks everyone.

Car is a MBE320 (W210). Trucks are '91 and '00 Dodge Diesels. My parents have an '09 Sienna and a '99 E320 too. If I could buy a barrel of just one oil and also use it in the older farm tractors and Cat loader we have, it would really be nice.

I checked an older jug I had and the 5W-40 Turbo Diesel truck Mobile 1 is also listed as good for SL (I seem to recall 1ags telling me once before there is a special MB 229 code the oil must meet, but only the 0w-40 lists that code). On the Mobil1 website it lists the 5w-40 as SM too.

5W-30 is listed as SN (not for diesels).
10W-30 is listed as SM (not for diesels).

The Mobile 1 website says MB calls for 0w-40 for my engine, but the dealer (had a special on last oil change) told me they used 5W-40.

I'm in the same boat as CSP97 where it seems that stores rotate which ones they carry and you can't seem to get the same oil twice. Dad doesn't have the patience to look around to find what he needs, so we have 2 or 3 different jugs of various Mobil 1 blends in the shop, including the 5w-30 and 10W-30.

The 0w-40 and 5w-40 seem to be the only ones that may work in everything.

There is also a Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5w-40, but their website doesn't say much about it.

What would you do/use?

milkman, so I heard!

Read your manual, if you have FSS, you need to have an oil that meets MB Spec 229.1 otherwise a good synthetic with 5000 mile intervals would be fine. You cannot follow FSS if you dont use an oil that meets the spec. Or so they say.

milkman,

Like 1ags said, Merc has an established spec for oil to use, but it seems like Mobil 1 0W-40 passes all the specifications.

I looked for the 5W-40 ESP you're talking about and it is nigh-impossible to find in stores (or at least in the Nashville area where I'm at). The only place I could find that sold it was Amazon, so I bought 0W-40 at walmart and called it a day.

If your engine is the M112, the spec sheet (229.5) for what oils will work is below. Perhaps some of these oils will work for your other vehicles and you can get away with the "1-jug scenario".

1ags - I have the FSS. I wish the manual said something more than "Use only oils recommended by MB. Info on recommended brands is available at your authorized MB Center." My dealer isn't worth much in regard to help.

KY Ag - Thanks for the link. Although the fact that it shows the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Oil to be a 0W-40, when the Mobil 1 website only lists a 5W-40 in the diesel category.

That is what is so frustrating when it comes to buying oil...misinformation and not being able to find the one or two options that supposedly work. I think I'll call the 1-800 Ask Mobil (275-6624) number I found sometime and see what they can tell me about whether the 5w-40 diesel oil meets the 229.5 spec.
