My grandmother has decided to sell her truck and I wanted to throw it out to you guys first. My grandfather bought it for her new in 1984 approx. 6 months before he passed away.

Details:

- 1984 F150 XLT Longbed
- 302, 3 speed auto, 2wd
- Power windows, locks, tilt and cruise
- Has not been driven since 2004
- We have ALL receipts and work that has been done to the truck.
- Tanks were drained and carb rebuilt in 2001, will def need to be done again at this point
- Ran and everything worked when it was parked in 2004, been sitting in her garage.
- Bought new from Joe Lewter Ford in Whitewright, TX

Wow! My Dad had a similar truck when I was growing up. That brings back memories!

I drove an 81 that was similar to that one. Biggest piece of crap I ever drove. I think the 81 was the 1st year to come out with the smog crap on p/u's.

That p/u looks great and looks better after 25 years than mine did after 5.

Yeah, it's got all the smog stuff and a little 2bbl...but, since it's over 25yo it can all be removed.

I honestly think the one I had was just a POS. I had friends that had similar p/u's that ran a hell of a lot better than mine. Even those with 302 ran better.

Hey Doc! Those are vent wings, saw jetch pounding the "olds" recently but you "youngs" need some coaching up...

Best truck I ever had was an 84 F150. Drove it all four years I was at A&M.

I worked at a summer camp and when we got the trucks new, the AC worked.

After one summer, the vent wings were your life saver. That and doing 50 MPH on a dirt road that if they caught you doing that, they banned you from driving.

My son's first vehicle was a 30 year old Pontiac Catalina (tank) little old lady car with 34,000 miles. Ran great, the only problem we had was that the A/C leaked the freon out and it cost more than we wanted to mess with to fix.

We sold it to one of our daughter's friends after we were done with it. About a year later, I saw the mom in town and asked how it was running. Apparently the automatic trans committed sepppuku after they'd had it a few months. They spent $3200 on a new trans, about $600 more than they paid us for it. (Yes, the trans guy saw them coming)

Bottom line, are transmissions prone to early failures after sitting this long?

Your guess is as good as mine...but for this truck I would def drain, refill and change the filter on the trans before seriously driving it anywhere.

-Transmission flush?
-Removal of smog gear?

Battery, Drain both fuel tanks, rebuild carb, replace all hoses, belts and fluids.

Tires.
