FINGERNAIL POLISH ON PAINTED RIMS!

Yup, you read it right. My youngest daughter was coming into the house from a friend's when she dropped a bottle of green finger nail polish next to my car. The bottle exploded and green fingernail polish splattered all over my black painted rims.

I grabbed some fingernail polish remover and began cleaning it off as fast as I could. It took me about 30 minutes to get it all off but I'm really worried about what the fingernail polish remover may do to the paint on the rims.

I got some automotive car wash soap and soaped up the wheel with warm soapy water and washed it down as best I could. I then rinsed it with the hose and did it again. I found a few more specks of polish so I got them off and washed the wheel again very well.

I think I'm gonna go to the car wash and use the "power wand" and give it a good "blasting" to make sure I get any residual out of any cracks or crevices.

Any other thoughts?

(PS: my daughter was hysterical and told her mom she was gonna die and no one would find her body)

Find Justin Beiber's black CTS-V and swap the rims.

**Yeah, that's got to suck.

Did black paint come off with the fingernail polish?

I don't think those wheels are clearcoated...they're powdercoated, right?

call up Monster and see if you can get a sponsorship?

I'll agree with Cat, the powder coating shouldn't come off with nail polish remover.

BTW, I'd keep your daughter and her friends away from your vehicles in the future.

Black did not come off. I'm pretty sure the wheels are powder coated but I'm not sure. It seems too hard to be paint but who knows. I was just freaking out.

My youngest daughter was sobbing and hiding from me. She begged my oldest daughter to come tell me (I was asleep no less and I'm not a pleasant morning person under the best of circumstances). My oldest came and told me and I went ballistic. She told me to "chill out and don't kill the freaking messenger".

Anyways, I think it's going to be ok. I'll just keep an eye on the wheel and hope crap doesn't start flaking off.

Acetone will take off paint like nobody's business. Will also dissolve plastic and glues.

Powder coatings, to the best of my knowledge, is more of a thermoset plastic (but not really) than a paint. Paint would be solids (latex) suspended in a solution and allowed to dry. Powder coating would be solids that are chemically connected on the surface. Once again, depends on the type. Most I have dealt with were this. This is similar to gun coatings; you can clean it off when you apply it, but once you bake it, you are set.

Hence, the analogy to thermoset plastics (resins, urethanes, etc.) You can chip off the coatings, but trying to get if off with solvents will be almost impossible. Should be good to go.

Aren't there plenty of places that can refinish a wheel?

Sure it's inconvenient, but stuff happens.

Children need to fear on occasion.

I agree, when they do something wrong, but this was an accident

Cut litig8r187 some slack. Remember that he has had a series of daughter/car incidents recently.

She did do something wrong...she had green nail polish.

And, they woke him up from his mimis....so...

I used a "Non Acetone" fingernail polish remover but I'm not sure exactly what it was.

And I agree, I HATE NAIL POLISH! It should be banned from the freaking planet! My girls have had more accidents involving that crap. I have a spot on the dash of my truck where some spilt and it ate the color off. I can't tell you how many times I've had to get it out of carpet or off of counter tops. I believe it is designed to spill.

I agree with EMY93, a little fear is not a bad thing. It certainly doesn't mean I care more about my car than terrifying my daughter but it helps the learning process.

However, I really didn't scare my daughter or even yell at her.

I do think my oldest daughter scared the hell out of her (which is funny because she has been the cause of other significant automotive destruction). You know how it goes: "Oh crap dad is gonna kill you! You better go hide somewhere while I tell him" as she snickers and runs to my room. I suspect she saw this as an opportunity to finally let little sister fade some heat for "automotive chaos". That's what happens when you have an 18 year old daughter with a mischievous streak and a 13 year old, hormonal, overly sensitive daughter who believes anything her older sister says. The 13 year old is an easy target.

I did tell the 13 year old not to let anyone (including her sister) intimidate or scare her. Panicking is less than helpful in any accident. If that is how you react in a minor catastrophe, what are you gonna do when something real bad happens? When bad things happen, collect your thoughts, stay cool and deal with it. Crying and running around the house saying "Dad's gonna kill me" is a poor reaction to an accident. It is not helpful in solving the problem and even exacerbates it. That is what angers me and causes me to be a little "stern"

As most on here know, my kids are spoiled rotten. But they also understand that the advantages they have come via hard work (both mine and theirs). They also have a responsibility to take care of the things they have. I will not allow them to take their advantages for granted. Otherwise they simply become "spoiled little brats" (some may argue they are anyways). They know I have VERY high expectations for them and they must earn all they get (including privileges) through hard work and success. They understand there are consequences for their choices (good and bad). Their success will be based on the choices they make when they control their circumstances or how they react to things they cannot control (accidents).

However, the lessons they are learning are probably why they are both so successful in most of their endeavors. My oldest is a college athlete participating in two varsity sports on an academic scholarship. She just finished her first semester with a 3.0 GPA at a very tough private school.

My youngest is a straight A student in the top 5 of her class who participates and excels in athletics, band and dance.

No, my car is not more important than my kids but my kids understand responsibility for what happens in their life and the value of things we work hard for. They also know that, above all else, family is the most important and constant thing in life.

Thanks AGGODDESS. "C" finished her freshman year of soccer and was also recruited to run track. She will be running the 400 and the 4x4 relay this Spring.

The Lacrosse Coach wanted to teach her to play Lacrosse since it is so similar to soccer. When she found out there was no physical contact allowed in Women's Lacrosse she ask "then what's the point in having weapons?" and decided against it.

C sounds like one heck of a girl, lit!

Since the acetone did nothing to the finish of your wheel, you can be sure they are powdercoated. I powdercoated for about two years as a hobby/ side business. You'd need some extremely strong chemicals to take off PC.. Acetone wouldn't do anything to it.

Thanks Mustang. I'm very proud of both of my girls.

So far the wheel looks good so I may have got off without any permanent damage.
