How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm probably going to pick up this truck this weekend. I'm not looking to necessarily restore it. Just want to get it running and drive it around to run errands - pick up lumber for projects around the house - normal truck stuff.

Plus it will be something for me and my 8 year old son to play around with.

Anyway - i've got a 302 from a 1990 mustang in the garage - was wondering if any of you knew if it would work in the 63 and what mods would have to be made to make it work (haven't seen much on Al Gore's internet). It's got and the straight 6 in it now. Valve cover is off and carb is in the seat so i'll have to put it back together.

Also any other advice would be appreciated.

TIA
Silvy

With money any engine swap is possible, I'd get on some forum that has alot of Ford trucks or older cars with 302 engine swaps.

Is it somehow the 300 inline 6? I didn't think that came along until 1965, but it was a pretty solid choice.

Without doing any research, you may have to fabricate motor mounts, get a drive shaft made (depending on what tranny you go with) and you might have to customize a few things like shifter/throttle linkage. The only swap I've done is put a Chevrolet 350 in a 76 Firebird. Wasn't too bad b/c of the similarities with the camaro but I still had to improvise some things. Good luck.

Exactly like AgNav93 said.

That 302 will fit in there great. You will find that one thing leads to another though. It probably has gears in the rear end that won't be too good for highway use, and then 4 wheel drum brakes have their limits.

If you're in the BCS area, you can stop by my shop and I can show you lots of swaps in progress.

LMC and National Parts Depot have engine mount kits for the 289-302 engine. Both say no welding required. Cost around $98-109.

Thanks for the advice so far guys. It does have the Inline 6 in it i'm just not sure which one. I haven't actually seen the truck in person. If the title is clear i'll pick it up on Sat.

First priority is to get it running as is and then swap out the brakes. After that I'll attack the drivetrain - I've been reading that the better option may be to put in the Y8 but those blocks appear pretty pricey.

Here is a picture of the engine bay as is:

It's either a 223 or 262... My guess is that it's a 262 because it looks like there are extra ribs running down the engine. I'm pretty sure that the 262 had 8 bolts holding the valve cover down, vs. some other number on the 223.

Long day. Drove from Houston to fort worth to pick up the truck and haul it back. It has a 262 in it. While walking around the yard I found a 59 with a Y8 in it. The mounts are way different but they are going to throw it in for free. Now I have 3 options on motors.

Got to get some shuteye. Brisket goes on the smoker in 4 hours.

That thing is begging for an Ecoboost.

FYI, if its an original engine, its either a 223 or 262.

The 262 usually was for heavy duty applications, but was available as an order option on regular units.
