So the new toyota requires 0W-20. I've come across this quote at several places online

quote:
Genuine Toyota Motor Oil 0W-20 contains a Toyota specific additive package within it, making it not interchangeable with other synthetic oils of the same weight such as Mobil 1.

So does that mean I can't drain and replace with Mobil 1, that I HAVE to use toyota motor oil? I've never heard of that before. Also, I get 2 years free maintenance, but the OCI on the 0W-20 is 10k miles so I only get the free oil change every 10K miles. I know full syn oil can go longer, but 10K seems a little long. I've been using mobil 1 on my previous car and changing it every 5-7. Been pleased with it so I had hoped to continue using that at 7500 or so.

The reason you have to use Toyota oil is because they have sludge problems. Basically, they put an anti-sludge additive in their oil that isn't in standard 0W-20.

If the OCI is 10k, then I would just buy the Toyota oil. It's only ~$6/quart (from reading forums posts), and you only need 4.4 quarts, so it's not crazy expensive.

Everything I've read said they've resolved the sludge issues they used to have.

The Toyota sludge problem was releated to pre-2003 engines. Long since fixed. Toyota may have HAD a sludge problem but that was a long time ago.

Unless Helgs has some real data that says otherwise.

Well, I thought that Toyota still had a sludge problem. Maybe that's fixed because of the oil additives.

Toyota changed the engines. I believe they enlarged some of the oil passages in the engines.

0W-20?

maybe they should stop lubricating engines with motorcycle fork oil.

Ok, what's wrong with 0W-20? Lots of new engines are using it.

Nothing SKF.

TR uses straight 50 weight...because that's real oil.
