I'm looking to get a cheap used 4x4 vehicle, and I came across a 1993 Ford truck with the 460. I know that engine was around for quite a while, but I was wondering if it was any good, or if it was just a gas-drinking boat anchor.

Ford 460 is a 7.5L not a 7.3L.

And other than being gas pigs, they're good motors.

Need to find out which transmission it has. There were 4 or 5 choices in 1993.

VERY strong, reliable motor and great platform to build power or just keep stock.

Engine was around for a very long time...parts are also cheap and plentiful.

OH...and yeah, what he said...which transmission is behind it?

My dad had one in the station wagon we had when I was a little kid. Talk about monster power.

I meant 7.5, good catch.

All I know about the transmission is that it is an automatic. What should I be looking for?

Here is the VIN if anybody knows how to decode it.

Negative, however says it was a built as a chassis-cab truck...it have a flat bed on it?

I bet that was a former plow truck.

Rare bird, a single cab long bed F350.

Monobeam front axle. It'll ride like a covered wagon.

Looking around that site, I found this:

$1900. 5sp manual. That would be a fun vehicle to beat up.

Do you think maybe the first truck came ready to be a tow truck? I guess it would have a dually rear axle for that though...

I had a 460 in a 3/4 ton ford. I had to get rid of it because of gas consumption. That was when gas was below $1.50. When you punch it you will be able to see the gas gage go down. But it is a beast. The truck I owned could peel out in 4 wheel drive.

It might serve my purposes... not a daily driver by any stretch, just something to get around in in the snow (which only happens about 2-3 times a year where I live) and the occasional hauling of bricks/limbs/firewood/trash etc, probably only about 15 miles at a time a few weekends out of the year. All in all it might see action a grand total of 15-20 days out of the year.

I have usually just borrowed my dad's truck when I have needed to haul things, but that is a little bit of a hastle for me and him, plus my wife is a nurse at a hospital so she has to get to work no matter what the weather is.

Basically I just need a cheap 4x4 truck, and I'm not worried about gas mileage.

I want that just to use as a tow vehicle! I've never seen a single cab 460'd truck either.

I went and checked it out.

The truck has new steering arms and a new master brake cylinder. It drove pretty well. The transmission is not original, but it shifted very well. The AC and heat work great. The steering was not loose.

A few surface rust spots on the bed, bed rails, and one spot on the hood, but nothing that I wouldn't be able to fix pretty easily.

My only concern is the belt squeals. I don't know if it needs to be tightened or what. It does it right around the alternator, so I don't know if its the belt or the alternator itself.

The engine itself seemed awesome. It accelerated great.

Any thoughts on the squealing? If it can be easily fixed, it might be a good buy at $2,800.

I wish I could find a truck like that around here. Some new shoes, and I would have something to take to the wife's family's place.
