I found out today that my tires are filled with nitrogen. I have had my tires filled with air 4-5 times. What problems can or will this cause?

even better. a friend of mine's uncle that has worked as a chemical engineer for 30 years for a certain petroleum company touting the great effects of nitrogen enriched gasoline says he can't figure out what it could possibly do to help your car.

Good to know. Thanks!

The idea is that nitrogen does not contain wator vapor like air does therefor its pressure is more predictable. Important for race cars not so much for us.

ZOMG!!!!!

the, uh, air is, uh, like, duuuuuuuuuude! it's like, oh my gosh, 80% nitrogen NATURALLY!

zomg!!!

Better hope their wasn't any residual water accumulated on the inside of that tire then.

heres an email from a friend at tire rack from a few years back.
quote:
Nitrogen is more resistant to heat changes than every day air. which means you get more consistent air pressure and less fluctuation in the tire sidewall. On the flip side, the air that you breathe is around 80% nitrogen and air does contain moisture which can accumulate in small amounts in the tire (not enough to give a second thought). The problem with filling a tire with nitrogen is that the first time you introduce air to it you eliminate all of the helpful properties of the nitrogen and render it inert. Nitrogen was originally introduced to tires for racing because of it's resistance to heat. If you watch professional racing all the tires are pre mounted and fill before they come on the track and just in case the teams have a pressure canister filled with nitrogen for adjusting the tires air pressure.

The tire rack has thought about using nitrogen in our tire and wheel packages off and on for many years but there really is no advantage to our customers and your customers for us to do this, since most people do not readily have access to it and they would just end up using regular air.

Well this explains why like every other week my low tire light comes on. I went to get it fixed the first 4 or 5 times it came on and then I stopped worrying about it. Why would a company put nitrogen filled tires on a car when they know it wont be racing!

because it is cheap (less than $10), but you can sell it for $199.

I still say they should fill tires with Hydrogen...

it would make wrecks so much more interesting...

Sorry but if filling your tires with hydrogen helped then race teams would be doing that to eliminate unsprung weight.

I wonder if tires seal well enough to hold hydrogen in the first place...

REALLY REALLY REALLY big expensive unnecessary crock ...

http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/spesific-heat-capacity-gases-d_159.html

Heat capacity of air = 1.01
Heat capacity of nitrogen = 1.04

As mentioned before the main factor is eliminating water vapor from the air going into the tire.

Putting an air dryer on your compressed air system works the same way.

pls buy nitrogen. buy it all, and buy it often.

kthx

Eliminating water vapor is equally unnecessary. The outside surface of the tire is exposed to GREATER amounts of water, both vapor and liquid.

Come on ... those folks in Akron know what they're doing when it comes to oxidation and water contact additives to the rubber.

All that being said, if you WANT to spend unnecessary money, I'll give you my address and you can mail those checks to me. Will do you about as much good.

It's not what it does to the tire compound but rather the pressure in the tires that is of concern.

Don't listen to this guy. Buy nitrogen. It's good for my job and stock.

SWOSU you are correct. I should have prefaced my response by saying:

In an upper class racing situation...you are trying to eliminate water vapor

Don't worry Flaith, I'll use all the di-hydrogen oxide I possibly can today...

OK, Flaith, time for a referendum.

Who should get the stupid people's money, SWOSU or Flaith?

By the way, do you work for Air Liquide? If so, where?
