trying to change oil in moms expi, and was a bonehead and only bought 5 without even thinking.

nice special going on at Auto Zone right now. Grabbed 5 quarts of Valvoline Max Life Syntetic Blend and a good Filter for 17.99, and by doing that got 2 dollars off new air filler which ended up costing 14.

Got oil, filter, and air filter for like 30 bucks! Not bad...

She called Exxon today and it was going to cost 70 for that. I told her I would kill her if she did it. (air filter is the single easiest replacement in Triton Fords. PERIOD)

TIA

I also have another ?.

If I do a partial tranny fluid change on her truck by dropping the pan, will 5 quarts be enough since none will empty from the torque converter, etc?

the guy at auto zone said 5 quarts should do it. I thought it would take more...

I know it holds like 12 in total or something like that...

And are fluid changes like this bad for the vehicle? Mixing old with new? I dont think shes changed it for 100K

Most V8s take 6 quarts, don't forget the oil filter (at least every other oil change) and washer fluid.

If its a 97-03 2 Valve 5.4 or 4.6L V8, then it takes 5.5-6 quarts, depending on how much it drains.

Doesnt Valvoline Max Life oil have a 'conditioner' in it that makes your seals swell?

Not all V8s take 6 quarts. The older OHV pushrod V8 Fords took 5 quarts.

Most Modular Fords take 5.5-6 quarts.

Some Mercedes and BMW V8s take 6-9 quarts of oil.

My Mercedes 3.0L I-6 Diesel engine takes 8.5 quarts of oil. Fords 7.3L V8 Powerstroke Takes 16 quarts of oil. On and on....

On the Transmission, no, a complete change is not required. Modern fluids are ok to mix new with old, since you're going to be replenishing the additives, with the new fluid. I change my tranny fluid in my cars every 30K, and I just drop the pan, clean the pan and magnet, put a new filter on and top her off.

I would imagine 5 quarts would be close but may pick a few extra up. change the filter while youre at it. IIRC these gaskets on the transmissions are reusable. Make damn sure you use the right fluid. If the truck has a 4R70W, you must use Mercon V, if you have a 4R100, you must use Mercon III. DO NOT mix these transmission fluids. Your dipstick will show which one to use. 4R70W dry fill is 16 quarts, but the pan will get out 4-6 quarts only. DOnt forget to check the fluid on level ground and with the engine warm after you've put the selector through all the gears.

Good luck and you'll be surprised how smooth that thing shifts after you put soem fresh fluid in it. I bought a used Navigator once with the A4WD, owner said dealer told them it needed a transmission rebuild because it would very loud 'whump' and shudder when it went into overdrive.

I changed the transmission fluid 3 times in 3000 miles and guess what, the noise disappeared.

Why would you go to the trouble of changing the oil and not the filter?
