How long do you want to ignore this user?
04' Taurus has had a slight whine at idle and just above since I got it. If you press on the hose that comes out of the air filter, whine goes away.

Check engine light came on with some rough idling the other day...had it coded out, and returned 5 possible scenarios, one of which is a vacuum leak. From my preliminary research online, all of my symptoms combined point to a vacuum leak being the most plausible.

My question is, what should I do next? Replace that hose?

What code is it, and do you have the 3.0L Vulcan or Duratec?

If it is a vacuum leak and you know which hose it is, go ahead and replace it. The hoses are cheap enough at any parts house.
I would if it were mine.

Then if problem not solved you can go deeper into the problem.

good luck

3.0 Duratec, error P2195. "Definition: Lack of H02s-11 switch-sensor indicates lean. ECM tried to correct for a lean condition, ECM made a rich correction, but was unable to bring within specs, probably causes: 1) Failed H02s sensor 2) Open or short circuit condition 3) Failed fuel pump or blocked fuel filter 4) MAF sensor failure 5) Vacuum leak".

Thanks.

You have NO other codes?

There is a TSB On this....

# TSB #18411 -- MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP ON WITH DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE P0133, P1131 OR P2195. *TT (NHTSA ID #10012969, FEBRUARY 01 2005)

Also, O2 sensors and many other emissions related parts (Mass air flow sensors, cats etc) are covered under a federal emissions warranty for 8 years, 80,000 miles.

Check your owners manual for details but this may be covered under warranty.

Nope, that's all that spit out when the tech checked for codes.

edit: Still think I have a problem due to hose whine and rough idle, however.

ISSUE NOTE
This article is intended to aid in diagnosing P0171, P0174, P1130, P1131, P1150, P1151, P2195, or P2197 (system lean or lack of
switches) when a vacuum leak is present. sensors, MAF sensors, and PCM replacements are not an effective repair when a vacuum leak is causing the above DTC’s

DTC’s FREEZE FRAME DATA WILL INDICATE THE ENGINE AND AMBIENT CONDITIONS WHEN THE HEGO DTC WAS SET. THESE ARE IMPORTANT HEGO BECAUSE THE VACUUM LEAKS MAY OCCUR ONLY WITHIN SPECIFIC TEMPERATURE RANGES AND MUST BE DUPLICATED TO. DETECT THE LEAK.

FUEL TRIMS AT IDLE ARE PARTICULARLY SENSITIVE TO VACUUM LEAKS SINCE THE UN-METERED AIR “LEAKAGE FLOW” IS A HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF TOTAL AIRFLOW AT IDLE THAN AT PART THROTTLE. THE BAROMETRIC PRESSURE (BP) PID IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO VIEW WHEN DIAGNOSING A VACUUM LEAK. BP IS AN INFERRED PID CALCULATED DURING HIGHER ENGINE LOADS.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
FREEZE FRAME AND ADAPTIVE FUEL VALUES (ASSOCIATED WITH “LONGFT” PID) WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE IF A KAM OR OBDII RESET WAS PERFORM KAM RESET OR OBDII RESET (CLEAR CODES) AT THIS TIME, RECENTLY PERFORMED. ADAPTIVE FUEL TABLES MUST BE INTACT FOR THIS PROCEDURE.

ACTION NOTE: DO NOT PERFORM KAM RESET OR OBDII

Perform the following inspections/repairs when the above codes are found in memory. Procedure provides instructions on how to make of the total fuel corrections (using scan tool or equivalent) at idle and high RPM’s to help determine if a vacuum leak is the root cause of the NOTE 1. Perform preliminary inspection, retrieve and record DTC’s and Freeze Frame Data.

NOTE: The information in Technical Service Bulletins is intended for use by trained, professional technicians with the knowledge, tools, and equipment to do the job properly and safely. It informs these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or provides information that could assist in proper vehicle service. The procedures should not be performed by “do-it-yourselfers”. Do not assume that a condition described affects your car or truck.

a. If DTCs are continuous, or if other DTC’s or idle, diagnose and repair those

b. Perform visual inspection - look for disconnected/broken/cracked vacuum hoses
especially near vacuum trees. Check PCV elbows for cracks or loose connection. Confirm vehicle has the correct PCV valve installed. If a suspect vacuum leak is found proceed to Step 4.

e. Determine total fuel correction at idle for and drive symptoms are present other than at in-line 4 cylinder engine or bank 1 of a
V-engine by adding LONGFT1 to SHRTFT1. codes/symptoms first. Determine total fuel correction for bank 2 of a V-engine, by adding LONGFT2 to SHRTFT2.

NOTE: MAKE SURE ONLY THE CORRECT BANKS AND TRIMS ARE ADDED TOGETHER (DO NOT ADD LONGFT1 TO LONGFT2 OR LONGFT1 TO SHRTFT2.)

NOTE • EXAMPLE 1: BANK1 LONG FUEL TRIM; EACH VEHICLE APPLICATION REQUIRES A PCV LONGFT1 = +13% AND SHORT FUEL TRIM; VALVE CALIBRATED FOR THAT VEHICLE. SHRTFT1 = +23%. THE TOTAL CORRECTION MOTORCRAFT PARTS ARE STRONGLY ON BANK1 IS +36% (13%+23%=36%). RECOMMENDED. ALSO, THERE WILL BE A • EXAMPLE 2: BANK2 LONGFT2 = +24% AND NORMAL VARIATION IN FUEL TRIMS FROM BANK 2 SHRFT2 = -3%. THIS TOTAL FUEL VEHICLE TO VEHICLE. CORRECTION ON BANK 2 IS +21% (+24%-3%= +21%.). A TYPICAL VACUUM LEAK WHICH MAY SET A
LEAN CODE DTC WILL HAVE TOTAL CORRECTION OF AROUND +20% OR GREATER
PIDS: ECT/CHT, LONGFT1, LONGFT2, AT OR NEAR IDLE (DEPENDS ON CALIBRATION) SHRTFT1, SHRTFT2, IAT.

2. Determine if vacuum leak is present.
a. Set up scan tool to monitor the following
b. Start the engine and run at idle with all accessories off - gear lever in Neutral/Park.
c. Run engine until ECT/CHT matches the corresponding freeze frame data from Step 1. This will duplicate the customer’s engine operating temperatures when the DTC was set in memory. Hood may remain open during this test to help reduce ECT/CHT/IAT
temperatures. Keep IAT below 115° F (46° View and record LONGFT1, LONGFT2,
d. Record LONGFT’s and SHRTFT’s. SHRTFT1, SHRTFT2. Do not hold engine an engine RPM of 2500.
f. Depress and hold throttle pedal to maintain RPM’s at 2500 for more than 20 seconds.

Release pedal and repeat if more time isnecessary to record PIDS.
g. Observe PIDS with engine RPM at 2500.
h. Determine total fuel correction at 2500 RPM’s by adding the LONGFT’s to the
associated SHRTFT’s.
i. If the fuel correction decreases, more than NOTE
15%, (example: was +31% at idle on bank 1 but changed to +12% at 2500RPM on bank TO 1, a decrease of 19%) then a vacuum leak is most likely causing the lean diagnostic
test codes. Proceed to Step 3.
j. If the total correction remains approximately the same then the lean condition is not caused by a vacuum leak. Refer to the for further diagnostics.

C). TO PREVENT HIGH ECT/CHT AND IAT TEMPERATURES IT MAY BE NECESSARY PERFORM THIS TEST WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING FOR SHORT INTERVALS, ESPECIALLY WHEN AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE 85° F(29°C). USE OF A GARAGE FAN WILL HELP KEEP ENGINE TEMPERATURES STABILIZED DURING TEST. IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO RUN THIS TEST AT SPECIFIC ECT/CHT/IAT PC/ED TEMPERATURES, REVIEW FREEZE FRAME DATA. EXAMPLE: IF ECT WAS AT 160° F (71° C) THEN ENGINE MAY NEED A COLD START TO DUPLICATE THIS TEMPERATURE.

3. Pinpointing vacuum leaks.
a. Monitor SHRTFT’s with scan tool withengine running at idle.
b. Locate vacuum trees off air induction system and PCV system.
c. Use hose clamp or pinch off pliers (avoid tools with sharp edges). .
d. If vacuum leak is located proceed to Step 4
e. If no vacuum leaks are found, refer to the for further diagnostics.

NOTE INTAKE GASKETS OR MANIFOLD LEAKS CANNOT BE DETECTED BY PINCHING OFF A LINES. USE OTHER LEAK DETECTION VACUUM CAP OR EQUIVALENT CAN ALSO BE METHODS, SUCH AS SMOKE TEST, SONIC
USED TO BLOCK THE VACUUM SOURCE TO A TESTS, AND PROPANE.
SPECIFIC SYSTEM. DO NOT TRY TO PINCH OFF A HARD PLASTIC HOSE OR CONNECTION, TRY ISOLATING BY CAPPING. CLAMPING OF THE PC/ED

NOTE USE CAUTION WHEN CLAMPING HOSESFUEL SYSTEM PURGE HOSE MAY SHIFT SHRTFT DURING PURGING MODES, USE VISUAL INSPECTION ON THIS HOSE IF RESULTS ARE NOT CONSISTENT SHRTFT

4. Verification of repair.
a. Prepare scan tool and vehicle to monitor. short term fuel trims (SHRTFT’s).
b. Get vehicle into stabilized idle condition,
c. Observe short fuel trims when pinching specific vacuum lines. The values unless freeze frame indicates other should decrease more than 15% towards temperatures.
the negative direction, if a vacuum leak was pinched off. (wait up to 20 seconds to observe if pinch has any effect on
d. SHRTFTs should decrease by at least 15%.
If they do not, return to Step 2.
e. Clear KAM and codes.

NOTE EXAMPLE: PINCH OFF THE BRAKE BOOSTER VACUUM HOSE (DO THIS ONLY IN PARK) AND WARRANTY STATUS: Eligible Under Provisions Of
OBSERVE SHRTFT’S. IF THE SHRTFT’S DECREASES, BY MORE THAN 15%, A VACUUM LEAK IS PRESENT. IF THE SHRTFT1 WAS AT +14% BEFORE PINCHING THEN SHIFTS TO -7% AFTER PINCHING, TOTAL SHIFT OF 21%
TOWARDS NEGATIVE DIRECTION.

now i know how people in the nerdery feel. i'll see what i can do to replace the hose.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
My money is on the vac hose. If its a shaped hose, you'll need to go to the Fjord dealer to get it....
johnnynapalm
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's the ribbed hose coming off the left side of the air filter.

Any idea what it's called?
1agswitchin4lanes
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ford Calls it an outlet tube....Between the Throttle body and Mass air sensor.

Now this all makes sense. You're getting unmetered air in past the Mass air sensor so the car is leaning out and the Computer doesnt know why.

So that's why the code is saying it's trying to correct a lean condition?

Is this part something I can find aftermarket? Thanks for explaining this stuff...I'm useless if it's not computers.
1agswitchin4lanes
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Nope, OE ford only. Look at the price, its 30 bucks.

The O2 Sensors can only tell the engine computer to adjust fuel mixture so much, but if its not seeing a change (since the unmetered air is still coming in), then it'll throw a code.

Order one of those hoses ASAP.

I'm seeing this:

outlet tube - 3.0 liter ohv - 3.0 liter ohv 00-04 $31.00 $0.00 $23.25

I really doubt i have dual overhead. Does that seem right?

YOu said you had a Duratec V6, which is DOHC.

See my picture above. It shows the price for DOHC.

Post your VIN number and let me run it for you.

Seriously just call the parts dept at your nearest Ford dealer and ask them to get it.
