It's been a while since I attended my last "Yoe-Day" commemoration (long story, but we have such a day each May, and it's cool, so no mocking),but here's the story as I always tell when asked:

C. H. Yoe and his wife donated money and land for a high school to built in Cameron. One of the main stipulations was that it bear his name, and I THINK have a day of commemoration in May (the aforementioned "Yoe Day".

To make it all work with his name, they came up with a mascot, which happens to be a medieval archer. Archers were known as "yeomen", and were sometimes the Queen's guards.

So, if you see the mascot as an Archer, that is why. They switched around the "e" and "o" to make it work with Mr. Yoe's name.

Someone else can fill in the gaps. I was, after all, class of 1977, so I'm old and forgetful.

That's a pretty accurate description there Jan...you must have been a Yoe Day representative from your home room at some point and actually paid attention to the ceremony!

I think provisions of the Yoe will are the reason that old eyesore in the middle of our beautiful new school can't be torn down.

That's true about the old school, but come on.....all that HISTORY (I'm serious, but then again, I'm a teacher and student of history).

It's a bit of an eyesore, but it's "On Yoe High".

Oh, and yes, I was a goody-two-shoes who was "elected" to represent my homeroom at least 4 times while in elementary/junior high. I cannot lie. That was me.

Well, I'm torn...

Like you, I like the history of that old building, and I was in favor of it not being torn down. But after the construction was finished, it just seems exetremely out of place and looks neglected. I'm sure people who don't know the situation look at it and are extremely confused.

jan, you are young and you got your history correct or close enough. I am in the class of '55 and we won the first bell. As you can see I am in the class of '59 from Aggieland. Go Yoe and Gig'em Aggies

I wonder who you are, RaggieRex. You probably know my mom and her friends, although you're younger. I KNOW you know one of my good friends' dad, as they own the local chicken farm.

I BElieve:
Yep, I believe it's safe to say Mr. Yoe thought quite highly of himself. It never really bothered me, because we got that cool day off in May. However, as localag says, it's kind of stupid having that old three story relic building nestled amongst the beautiful new school they just built.

I'm pretty sure we got our money's worth out of that building.

You're an Aggie and asking what a Yoeman is?

AND there is no such thing as "Cameron Yoe Yoemen". Makes us sound like the Yo-yos
There is no such thing as Cameron High School, it is Yoe High School in Cameron, Texas.
We are the Cameron Yoemen. I am a Yoeman but I wear the Columbia Blue of the dreaded China Spring Cougars.

The scoreboard at Round Rock during the Hutto game was driving me insane.

What is wrong with keeping a building constructed in 1921 around? It adds character and will outlast the new buildings.

Yes, how crazy would it be to call your team the Yo-yos.

It really does look terrible in the middle of the new complex. It needs to go.

Maybe they stopped using this? Did they? Maybe 12th Man's too young.

He's lucky. I always thought that was, well, embarrassing.

Does that make me a bad Yoeman?

I think jr. high teams are the "Young Yoemen" now.

According to a gentleman who has lived in Cameron all of his life and went to Yoe High in the 40's says they have always been Yoemen.

High school level, yes. But I'm pretty sure the 7th and 8th grade teams were the Yoe-Yoes at least in the early 70's. JanAg should be able to confirm that.

So, why did the "Yoe" let Billy Pittman go to the enemy down in Austin...

Sadly, he sure looked good last night...

.

It's true. I was a cheerleader at "Cameron Jr. High" (one of the first few years when it had been converted from O.J. Thomas High School).

We had a white "Y" with a megaphone across the middle that said "Yoe Yoe's". I am SOOOOO not proud of that (being a cheerleader and the Yoe-Yoe's part).

FWIW: I don't know if it's still this way or not, but the middle school colors weren't maroon and grey...they were maroon and white.

Question about Derek Evans:

Is he a senior or junior? My coaching friend (localag88's buddy) told me (I could've sworn) that he was a senior this past season.

Yet, Rivals has him listed as a junior recruit.

Anyone?

Very proud '97 Yoe graduate here. I love the tradition, history, and story behind Yoe High and proud to be from Cameron. I am happy to see the new buildings but, there is a lot to be said for main Yoe and the remaining historic structures on campus (i.e. the stone around Yoe High Field.) Makes sense that tons of Yoemen go on to become Ags. I will hate to see the day that Main Yoe comes down. I couldn't believe they chopped down the two big magnolias in front. Guess you just don't respect things as much until you are w/o.
If the visiting team's cheerleader's signs said "Yo-yo the Yoemen" then that game was already over. So original.
I believe one reason Billy is not an Aggie is b/c we recruited him as a defensive back. Think we could have used him this year?! He was definitely good but, not a 4* coming out of YHS or anything. I would say he has surpassed expectations after this year.
Derek Evans is a senior. Hope he finds somewhere to play but, word is he might have trouble with the academics side of things. Good luck.

After what I witnessed in the three or so games I saw Cameron play this season, I would say Evans can definitely play D-I ball somewhere. His ability to go upstairs and haul in a pass was incredible...I hate to make the comparison to Randy Moss, but he made me think that several times.

He would probably be a great fit for a smaller, private school with a solid throwing quarterback. I would think Baylor, TCU, or SMU would be lucky to get him.

Looks like I've been found out! Things are good in AR. Long ways from C-town. Ha.

The comparisons to Moss are actually not far off. Once I saw him as a sophmore I just wanted our qb's to throw constant jump balls to him. Hope he finds a school.

No I am not too young. I was at OJT in the mid-70's. I was a senior on the team that all others are compared to.

The sophomore QB this year is a Billy clone. He is probably faster than Billy. Evans will not play D-1 football or any other place that requires grades to qualify.

I just hope that Cameron gets to play China Spring in 06. My oldest son will be playing Friday nights as a sophmore...
