I think its about to happen, and it totally sucks.

I guess the official raping of the land is fixin' to start on Padre Island.

South Padre has flourished am I correct? Corpus needs to let growth happen and reap the benefits.

That area isn't part of South Padre Island.

This just ticks me off. This is going to create problems.

Do people not understand that they are building on a barrier island. The island is in a constant state of change. Eventually a hurricane like Katrina will hit the area, and when it does, there isn't going to be much if anything left. I hope a storm comes and washes their crappy homes away.

Why do people have to keep on building on the coast and ruin what pieces of nature we have left?

Yes, SPI has flourished...and you can't drive on the beach, you can't see the Gulf from the road, you can't park on the sand, you have to pay to walk to the beach, all you see is high-rise condos, stores, and eateries, there isn't any natural environment anymore....do i need to continue?

I really hope they dont think they're going to get a private, pedestrian beach. That's MY spot to hang out so i guess I'll have to watch the raping take place first hand. I've never wanted a hurricane to hit CC more than I do right now.

I can just see it now. People will absolutely tear that stretch of beach up just so they can "prove" that it's still public and they can park and fish and drink and whatever else they want there.

Get a grip! If it's that important to you, do something about it instead of just complaining on a message board.

Hell, half of the Bluff does that now...

This is a bad idea. Go take a look at Galveston for a million reasons why.

a...I dont "tear up" any part of the beach.
2...I leave the beach like i found it.
III...Do something about it??? You mean like petition to the city council to force a vote on Proposition 1 & 2 so the City of CC doesn't GIVE away beach front access to developers...Did it; won; no free land for developers; developers pulled out. Thank you very much.
In conclusion...I'm not gonna change my lifestyle just because a housing development is raping the land. If i have to petition, I will and if they try to take the public beach away, they better be prepared to fight.

KWarner...just a question...are you in favor of the city giving beachfront access to developers for free, just so they'll develop here? And in turn, taking that access away from lifetime/longtime locals?

Also, if they build taxes in that area are going go up even more. higher taxes is just what the area needs. i live in Port A. Luckly, I live with family so I don't pay the taxes. the day that my family dies, and leaves the house to me, looks like the day that I sell the house.

If you mean am I in favor of the city restricting vehicular traffic over 7200' of beach, then yes I am.

At no time will you be "banned" or "kicked off" or not allowed on the beach. All it means is you have to walk to your final spot on the beach. If driving the whole way is that important to you, that's what the National Seashore is for. You can drive up and down that thing all you want and don't have worry about any access issues. Or you could go to the state park. Or you could go 2 miles up the beach and drive there.

And thank you for not destroying the beach. You must be one of the few that don't cause it often looks like a landfill when I go out there.

Peter...You're misrepresenting the beach deal and you know it.

Yes. I'm in favor of closing the beach to the tons of trash that are brought out by the truck loads each weekend, 4th of July, C-Sculptures, etc. I think it would significantly decrease if folks had to carry their freakin' cases of beer, barbecue pits, diapers, etc. Bunch of freakin' messy, scummy gang bangers invade the beach and leave behind messes. I've changed from my previous opinion (drive on the beach) from ~ 15 years ago. This place is being destroyed by the residents (gang bangers, thugs, etc.) not the builders and homeowners out here.

And before you say anything, yes, I drink my share of the beer, have bbq's and change my daughter's diapers...I just pick up after everything. I'm sure you do the same. Point is...stop all the cars...stop most of the trash.

By the way, I wouldn't worry too much about the development. Most of the developers don't end up doing what they say (i.e. develop).

You guys wishing for a hurricane are stupid.

For you wishing that, I hope that you are the ones that are most severely affected by it when it happens...and remember your "wish" for the rest of your lives.

Your comments are idiotic.

Obviously I'm not in favor of a hurricane destroying CC, that was just an off the cuff remark. I, too, hate C-Sculptures and Spring Break crowds on PI for the same reasons you listed, however if you close the beach to vehicular traffic where are people suppose to park? Parking lots? Parking lots that would have to be constructed by leveling dunes and covering wetlands to pave with concrete and asphalt. I don't know how to solve the problem of trash on the beaches (both human and waste), but I have some suggestions.
First, the City of CC and/or Nueces County need to increse the frequency of cleaning the beach. One of my biggest complaints is beach parking permits. Yes, i purchased on for $12 but that's only becuase the beach nazi threated to give me a $150 ticket if i didn't have one. When I asked where the money went, he said to clean the beach, provide beach services, and dredge Packery Channel. Being a local, I knew he was full of sh** and I still haven't found out an answer.

Make more trash cans available and actually EMPTY them on a daily basis. When you have big events, i.e. C-Sculptures & SB, bring in MORE. Bring in dumpsters for the day, and haul them off when they are full.

Instead of issuing tickets for not have a beach parking permit, issues tickets for LITTERING. Yes, LITTERING is a crime, too. After having to pay a $200 littering fine I'm guessing people will be more responsible with their trash.

Actually clean the beach every day. The city of CC and Nueces Co. have a hoard of free labor...they're called inmates. Get a van and some trashbags, drive them out to the beach every morning and have them pick up the trash. Not that difficult. Also, get a tractor with a tiller and till the sand. STOP scooping it up and dumping it in the dunes.

OK, I'm off my soapbox.

I still will wish for a hurricane. I do live in Port A and will be affected by one, and it is a pita to deal with.

A hurricane can be beneficial to the area as well as destructive. Look at South Padre after Bret in 99. All kinds of land cuts and mini channels were formed, creating new pathways for water exchange and what not. I bet you Fish Pass and the other channels that have no direct connection would open up again. I have family who fished Fish Pass when it was still free flowing. They say it was some of the best fishing they used to do.

Which came first: the hurricane or these atrocious beach front developments.
Salty Aggie 93

Peter...

Sounds like we agree on the trash issues. Inmate labor I totally agree with. More trash cans...dido. However, the parking fees are very very minimal and I can see where the $12/year generates nowhere near enough $ for the maintenance. Think about it...one of the scrapers would burn that much fuel in an hour or two. It would be interesting to see how many permits are sold a year (public info from parks dept) and figure out how many gallons of fuel it would buy. I bet it isn't enough to run the program for a year....let alone the labor, equipment maintenance, insurance, etc.

Yes. I'm all for the parking lots. In fact, I work for an engineering firm that provides environmental engineering services and I can assure you that the wetlands that are "destroyed" will be replaced on a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio (Corps of Engineers will require it) and will likely produce equal or better results.

You would also be able to limit the amount of debris that ends up on the beach from "land sources". Stopping the water floatables is a whole different issue.

Aggie 42...I guess I agree with you too. Maybe you should be the first one to "take a stand" and move out of Port A. Sounds like you are one of the "invaders" that are being talked about. Or...does your rule only apply to those nasty developers? Move inland where there are no pristine lands?
aggie4231

Im not an "invader".
Ive been coming to Port A since the early 80's. My grandparent's originally stayed at the RV park by the Jetties, then we started staying a t another one. My grandparents built a house in a neighbor hood that was already here when they retired.

I'm against building on the beach and the dune areas. I went to school in galveston and saw the damages that all the beach houses in Jamaica Beach and the West End has done to Galveston Island. They have tried all kinds of things to rebuild the dunes, and nothing is really working.

The one good thing going for Port A., is that we have plenty of beach area(relativity) in front of the dunes, except down by some of the resorts.

Aggie 42...

Again, I think you are mistaken. My firm has designed some of the shoreline protection systems in Galveston and I think if you were actually talking from real world data information review that you would find the shorelines, erosion rates, etc. have been improved in Galveston. Engineering is battling mother nature (although we realize we can never win...she always does )

My question to you is...if you believe that develoment in Coastal regions is a bad thing...why don't you move your trailer, beach house, etc. to an upland area? Stop contributing to what you claim is "bad".

My take on it is that you WILL NOT stop coming. Just like millions of others. So...why don't we do planned developments that take this into account and work systems out that work for the good of the environment, public, etc.?
aggie4231
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Sure didn't look like things in Galveston were improving/slowing down. Yes some areas were better, but others were, well, bad. Several professors who had been in Galveston for 20+ years, commented on how bad it was getting.

I should move upland. I don't even live on the beach. I live about 1.5-2 miles from the beach, closer to the channel. Yes, I lve in an area that were originally wetlands, but even the city missed that up. I live close to the water treatment plant/landfill. There are still wetland areas surrounding us though.

Even where I live we have problems. Even if it sprinkles, our street gets flooded in the cauldesack and by the stop sign, but not the center. The city doesn't care about drainage by our houses at all.

I hate development on the island.

Remember that except for pry J P Luby, a majority of the trash on the beach comes from offshore. Padre Island is in a unique spot on the gulf that receives currents from both the south and the north, dumping all the trash from ships, Mexico, and the Mississippi on our beach.
Peter Gibbons

The $12 for a beach parking permit it not my concern, my concern is that when the beach parking permits were first introduced, they were with promises of improving the beach with shower and restroom facilities, pavilions, and cleaner beaches. IF that happened, I have no problem paying $12/year, but since it's NEVER happend, why am I paying? I have a problem just giving my money to the city and having nothing in return. Lies and broken promises.

SPI has a constant flow of people and they all STILL come despite not being able to see ocean "fom the road". Love sitting on balcony and looking at that view.

Nothing wrong with construction....new buildings, etc. We will never agree and if the damn city council in CC would quit putting crazy wording into ballots and confusing the hell outta voters, I am more than sure that a ref would pass that allowed people to build on beach.

We will never make everyone happy....that is how it goes. Someone is ALWAYS gonna complain. I would rather see things like Schlitterbaugh, Moody Gardens, etc get built in the CC area. We could ave had some great attratcions to go ALONG with our beautiful beaches, instead...we have nothing.

You haven't seen the big blue building that was built a couple/few years ago right near Bob Hall Pier.

Those signs that say "showers" are where the showers are. The ones that say "restrooms" are where the plumbed toilets are located.
