no surfers here, but we really enjoy watching them in Galveston when we vacation there every summer.

Our oldest (now 19) wants to learn, but we can't seem to find anyone willing to give lessons - any suggestions? The problem we had the last two summers were lack of surf, but even before that we couldn't even get anyone to return phone calls or e-mails about lessons.

Your son probably doesn't have to have lessons if he wants to learn to surf. I started surfing a little over 3 years ago and I just paddled out and did my best. I made friends at the beach and people could see I was a beginner and gave me pointers. I'm teaching one 13 year girl and another 37 year old friend to surf this summer and would love for your son to join us if he wants to. I'm a school teacher so I spend my summers at the beach anyway. I'm no professional and I wouldn't charge for lessons, I just love surfing and love watching others learn to surf.

As far as there not being any surf, summer is the worst time to surf in Texas. It's a great time to learn to surf because of the warm water but if your son really wants to continue surfing he'll need to get a wetsuit because that's when we get more consistent surf.

Used to surf wayyyyy back in '72 in Galveston on any board that I could borrow, like you said the summer was the suck. Used to surf in February in cutoffs (didnt know anyone that had a wetsuit)for five minutes at the max. Would get out of the water completely purple in color and all the street people on the boardwalk thought we were insane. Stupid yes, insane no.

Surfside (pier - I can't believe we used to shoot through that. The fishermen loved us.)
The Boilers (Jamaica beach - Smack and Fishfaces' old hangout.)
The Groins (Galveston jetties - before we knew better.)
Bocachica (goofy but empty)
South Padre Island (ride goofy forever inside the channel when there are ten footers on the beach.)

Forgot: 6' Jacob, 23" wide single fin with hard rails and obligatory duct tape.

My mom would never let me go in the water past my ankles. Couldn't ride motorcycles either.
