I'm looking for recommendations for a good baker in Galveston. We need a birthday cake when we are there. Normally we use Sweet Memories in College station for custom cakes, but the timing of when we would leave for Galveston and when we would be eating the cake doesn't work out.

So we are looking for a baker in Galveston, or nearby, that does specialty cakes (not looking for grocery store bakeries).

Check into Sunflower Bakery or Patty Cakes Bakery. Both on 14th St just a few blocks apart.

Or, Texas Star Bakery on about 54th & Broadway

All solid recommendations. I've heard good things about the bakery across from Mosquito Cafe on 14th but I can't remember it's name. They do all the pastries for the restaurant. It might be one of those listed.

Edit: And if you're in the mood for tamales, Texas Star Bakery makes the best on the island even though they don't advertise them.
