Upcoming trip to Port A for the first time...
I will be traveling with my girlfriend and her family. Any "must do" activities in the area? Thanks.

Eat, drink, fish, and **** are the only other activities in PA besides going to the beach.

that just about covers it for Port A! Nothing better than a day on the island, cool wind blowing, sitting on the beach, poles out, sand in your hot dogs, beer in your hand...

One thing you could do, just for a change of pace is go to the water treatment plant. Seriously! There is a boardwalk behind it that goes out into the flats and there are alligators that live back there. Also, UT's marine institute is out there. I know they do tours, but having never done it, I don't know if it is worth it. http://www.utmsi.utexas.edu/visit/visitors-center.html

Otherwise, get some beer and some poles and relax. And if you are there on the 5th of September, take in the Larry Joe Taylor show. If not, just buy all his albums and play them the whole time you are in Port A.

If it is real crowded and you want to get away, you have several options. You could take the jetty boat to Saint Joe's island and have the island all to yourself. Go south to Gulf Access Road 2 (I believe it is 2, it is by the water tank). When you hit the beach, go south (right). That takes you to some jetties at Fish Pass. Not a lot of people go there and because it is actually on the state park, you don't need the stupid beach parking permit. Or drive the 40 minutes south to the National Seashore and have 60 miles of beach at your disposal, if you have 4x4.

Yak pretty much nailed it. I'll be there on Thursday. There is a pretty cool little candy store is PA that my kids enjoy right across the street from the grocery store.

Love goint to Port A with the wife and kiddo and hanging on the beach.

It is so nice and family oriented now.

However, when we go I still get "flashbacks" of the drunken debaturous '80s.

Port A was the blueprint for South Padre Spring Break back then. Now it is so laid back.

I remember when they had about a mile of beach lit up at night and staggering down an access road seeing the police just watching. There were thousands of people partying there arse off at about 3 AM with no end in sight. I asked the officers in slurred speach as I walked by with buddies and beer "so when are y'all gonna break it up?" His response was "we are going to go pick up the pieces left in the morning, they can have it tonight".

Good times back then partying hard. Good times now laying back with family.

What a transition it has made.

Just got back. The beach was is PERFECT condition. Best I've seen it in the last nine years. The water was also terrific - absolutely no seaweed. I always have a great time in PA. Can't wait to go back next year.
