My wife is a Marine brat and spent most of her childhood in Kingsville and Corpus. (All jewelry MUST come from the old place on Chaparral!)

I want to take her and our 10 yr-old child to Corpus/Port A/North Padre for part of Easter Week. Am I nuts to consider that with the colleges out for Spring Break or am I just a paranoid old fart?

All suggestions gratefully received.

I don't think Port A is that bad anymore as far as college kids and spring break, but I could be wrong.

I'd appreciate any specific suggestions regarding places to stay. We've lived out of state for a while and I would like some local advice --

Even though it's slightly off-topic, I'd go ask this on the Outdoors board. There are some Ags there (duckguide1 and B-1 83 come to mind) who live in the Port A/CC area and would be glad to help you out if they can.

Port A is great during spring break as they cater to families. There are lots of new condos going up on the island south of Port A. I haven't stayed in any of them, but it would be worth a call to see if you could find a room. The only places to avoid during Spring Break are JP Luby and the ferry.

Tim,

Check out Fortuna Bay Bed and Breakfast. Very reasonable prices...on the water in Corpus (island) and owned by an Aggie. Telll Jon one of his POA Aggie board members sent you. He'll know who it is.

Very nice place to stay. You'll have a blast. I'll even buy you a round of drinks...or have you guys over for some! Glad that you're coming to Corpus.

Salty, that place looks great. We'll go there at the end of school if we don't make it for Easter.

just got back from Port A for spring break --it was great --stayed at Port Royal--not too crowded ---kids are older now, but when they were younger, they really enjoyed being able to go back and forth to the beach/pool/hot tubs...giant slide to the pool for kids--can go through Corpus to avoid the ferry line--7 miles south of Port Aransas on 361.

My advice is to NOT take your family to NPI/CC beaches during the next two weeks.

I'm a local, grew up in Flour Bluff and on Padre Island and I'll be avoiding that place big time. I'll be hitting the Port A beaches instead. The past two Spring/Easter Breaks have been great in Port A. There is still a big crowd, but it's controlled college students and families, not the local gang-bangers that flock to NPI with their pitbulls and Budweiser.

Trust me on this....Port A. I'll be there. If you see me, stop for a beer. I'll be the guy in the Aggie cap, white pick-up w/ AFS sticker...oh, well, there may be a few of us out there that fit that description.

Went back to Port A last summer for the first time since we used to party there in the eighties. With a family now I enjoyed being there, but the memories of the old days were humorous and somewhat ironic. It really is different that what it was.

So much so, the "locals" didn't even remember the mile or so of beach that used to be lighted up at night in the party zone.

Jeez, we used to PARTY down there. I remember one night seeing the police looking down into the fray shaking their heads at the total debautchery going on. I asked when they planned to come on down and they responded "we'll just pick up the pieces tomorrow".

The early eighties in Port A were the predeccesor to the scene in South Padre at spring break. However, Port A was just plain out of control to the points of riots being the extreme. It did not even have to be spring break. Just pick a big weekend and the party was ON.
