I realize Shreveport isn't in East Texas, but for us here in Marshall it might as well be. I saw on the news that Shreveport is getting a Whole Foods. Finally a good grocery store within 30 minutes of Marshall. FRESH in Tyler is OK, but not worth the drive IMO.

Sadly it won't be until 2015...

Tyler is getting some dedicated Wal-Mart food stores, which might serve to prod Brookshire's off it's high price horse. It's not Whole Foods (which is price-proud, too) but it's something. Until Wal-Mart, Brookshires has chased every chain that has tried to come to town, going back at least to Weingartens probably 50 years ago.

Fresh is terrible... I can't stand going in there.

This.

They won't run Wal Mart neighborhood out. And it won't be hard to underprice Brookshires. I like Brookshires produce but dang everything else in the store is INSANE priced compared to just about every other grocery store out there. If the location where the WM neighborhood grocery is supposed to go actually happens like I think it will, Fresh and the Brookshires on Rice are in for a bit of a squeeze.

I like the products that Fresh carries and I think it's a good concept for the Tyler area....but there's something that doesn't "feel" right about it. Can't put my finger on what it is, but I never feel completely comfortable in there.

People always talk about the low cost of living in tyler. They obviously don't buy groceries there. I'd be surprised if the wal mart charges less - the others raised their prices when they came to Tyler (so a friend from here tells me).

Fresh isn't a bad compromise but not enough people buy whole foods stuff to keep it closer to that than a brookshires.

might have to check out shreveport for once.

Wal Mart grocery prices in Tyler are NOTHING compared to Brookshires prices. Granted, their produce and meat isn't nearly as good, but on the other stuff it's cheaper by a mile at WM.

I'm not sure what your friend is referring to when it comes to "raising the prices".

Super 1 is owned by Brookshire's. There used to be Kroger's in Tyler. Along with Piggley Wiggley, Weingarten's, Food Lion, Skaggs-Albertsons, Safeway (Know what the A&P rooster said to the Kroger hen? There ain't no Safeway), etc. Plus local stores. Brookshires is expensive but they know how to merchandise, there's no doubt about that. Brookshires vs. the new Wal-Mart entry might be a heavyweight bout.

I hate shopping at Walmart because it's always a zoo, and Walmart is bad about not consistently carrying brands/flavors of certain things that we buy. And, as stated, their meat and produce leave a lot to be desired. But their prices just cannot be beat, which is why we shop there.

If the folks at Brookshires/Fresh would just drop their prices to get in the same zip code as Walmart (they don't have to beat or even match the prices, just get close), I'd happily switch to shopping there on a weekly basis, as opposed to the once-a-month/special occasions trip I make to Brookshires/Fresh. So if these Walmart Neighborhood Markets can provide Brookshire's with a swift kick in the rear, good.

So just to confirm...the rumor is at least 2 Wal Mart neighborhood markets (groceries only) and 1 new Super Center in the next 12 months or so....

Super Center is on the east loop, and the neighborhood markets are at Paluxy/Loop and on Old Jacksonville.

Anyone heard anything different?

I was in Brookshire's Bergfeld last night...a small plastic container of pico de gallo was about four and-a-half. Holy bankruptcy, Batman!
