There are a lot of options, if you consider The Woodlands, Conroe, and Kingwood. But locally around Lufkin/Nac area. Crown Colony is the best course around but way too expensive in my opinion. The best courses for the money are Woodland Hills in Nac and Neches Pines in Diboll both munis but are in pretty good shape right now.
My favorite course that I have played in the area is Walden CC on Lake Conroe, but it is private you need to get in the good graces of a member to play, but it is top notch. The only course that I have played north of Houston that I really enjoyed were Augusta Pines in Spring/The Woodlands. I have some coworkers that play Tour 18 in Humble fairly regular and they really enjoy that track. It has been a few years since I have played down there so I don't know if the how they fared with the dry summer. I assume pretty well as good as they were maintained.
Tour 18 in Humble is in solid shape as of 3 weeks ago -- fun course to play.
Played Neches Pines in Diboll 3 weeks ago as well....disappointed in quality...I used to play it many years ago when it was a top ranked muni in the state. Worth playing, but don't get your hopes up that it's well manicured.
