one other request. Tell me about the best public golf courses in the Tyler area. Basically anything within a 40 minute of so drive that is well worth playing.

from my quick research it looks like Garden Valley fits the bill - anyone played it?
play it all the time. It's the best public here. you'll love it and they take very good care of it through the texas summers
I haven't played it, but have been told by many that Pine Dunes is the best course in the area.... (www.pinedunes.com).
we ended up playing Pine Dunes - what a great layout and it's in great shape. $45 weekday for that course is a steal. What a gem.
I am still shocked that the once crappy little 9 hole course that was Pine Dunes is now a very nice 18 hole golf destination. I went to high school in Frankston and that was where the golf team "practiced".
I agree its a great course off in the middle of nowhere. I would sure like to get back and play it one day.
