How long do you want to ignore this user?
OK guys. Some of my friends took me to a "hole in the wall" place in Brownsville to eat the other day. None of the waitresses could speak English and I can't speak Spanish but fortunately all my friends could speak both. There were a number of things on the menu that I had never seen before. (Pretty unusual since I have lived in the valley for 55 years.)

They ordered for me and I got an appetizer that I think they called "fideyo". It was like a bowl of soup with spaghetti in it. I really liked it and I want to find it in McAllen but I want to call it the right thing.

Can anyone help me out?

That would do. My wife is an excellent cook.

After my post I did a little looking around on the internet and I see that it appears that it is spelled "fideo" and there are many many different recipes, that seem to vary a lot. The stuff I ate was simple, no meat, but had an excellent flavor.

One of the best bowls of Fideo that I ever had was at "El Pozito" downtown. The "Rex Cafe" downtown also had a really, really good one. Don't know if either of those are even open anymore.

My British grandmother made the best Fideo I have ever had, man I miss it. The way I like it, it should have some chicken gizzards in it.

Valleyrat, just go to HEB and buy a box of vemichelli fideo and follow the directions. If you can use real chicken broth and a little chicken meat along with gizzards and some cilantro (one of the few things I like cilantro in) it is really, really good.

Anguish! I went to get some fideo at Kokos lunch yesterday and they didn't have any!! Problem in the kitchen. Fortunately the owner promised it for next tuesday and my treat would be on him.

My kids loved it when we lived in Laredo. I made it regularly. Had not thought of it in years. Wish I could get my Central Texas teacher friends to like South Texas foods. They even think Corn in a Cup to be too spicy, and I had only put in about a teaspoon of the chili sauce for a crock pot of corn, with the rest on the side to be added to taste. Wimps.

I ate Fideo at Koko's today at lunch (Wednesday) and it was real good. It had chunks of beef in it.

Beef in Fideo, blaspemy I tell you!!! LOL. Naw, seriously I am glad it was good. IMO, Fideo should only have chicken broth and gizzards.

Try it at some of the places downtown in McAllen sometimes.

Also, if you are not panicking over the incredible, IMO, global pandemic of Chicharon Flu and you want to go to a place in Reynosa that is very, very good try the Cafeteria El Rey, which is on Blvd. Morelos right across from the refinery. They have very, very good fideo, very traditionally Mexican. This place has some of the best food in Reynosa, it should be cheap and is one of my favorites over there. I would say it is 99% all local business and it is really, really good. Did I mention it was good.
