I'm going to be in Abilene on Friday & and in Baird on Saturday afternoon. I need some recommendations on good places - I say cafes - because they serve the best breakfasts and desserts.

Best breakfast in the area? (A hole in the wall is fine.)

Best desserts? Personally I'm a fan of pecan pie. Any reccommendations?

And I saw Vagabonds for pizza on a previous post. We'll probably try that on Friday night.

Thanks.

Vagabond has some pretty good desserts also. They are usually "creative" but the ones I've had are very tasty.

Edit to add: their bread and butter appetizer is outstanding too. Sounds ordinary, but its excellent.

+100 for Vagabond for luch and supper and dessert

Perini also has a cafe open in the mornings - never been there but everything else they do is worth it https://www.periniranch.com/the-gap-cafe/

and a special treat - for breakfast and lunch at the Dixie Pig

Didn't realize the Dixie Pig was still open. My parents went there when they were in college at McMurry a LONG time ago.

been around a long time
It was still open when I drove by a week or two ago at lunch
I used to eat there for breakfast several years ago a couple of times month when my schedule was different
all the waitresses looked like they might have been there since your folks were at McM
and the old man owner/boss sat at the front cash register all pissed off and never moved or smiled - especially after he got busted in a prostitution sting along with "Ponce"

That sounds like a story that should go in the "West Texas Connections" thread that fossil started!

Dixie Pig

Flippin' Egg

Believe it or not the breakfast buffet at Grandy's on the west side of town is very good.

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone. We went to Vagabonds on Friday and had the bread and butter appetizer and the rolls with the bolognese sauce and rolls. They were great.

Then we had a the Carnivore and Sofia pizzas. We enjoyed the Carnivore, more, because it was more spicy.

They ran out of pizza right as we were leaving.

We ate at the Flipping Egg on Saturday. That was fantastic, too.

Abilene is a nice town. I can see why someone would enjoy living there. We walked around downtown on Saturday. Very pretty setup.
