My two brothers in law just graduated with civil engineer degrees. I have told them about the oil boom going on and that it could be a big opportunity. Problem is that I don't know anything about engineering so I'm afraid I may be talking out my ass. Is there a demand for civil engineers in Midland/Odessa? I know some engineers post on here so I'd appreciate any input you have or advice I can pass along to them. Thanks.

Is there a demand for Engineers? Yes.

Yes there is.

It all depends on what kind of engineernig they want to get into. Civil is a very broad degree so unless I knew more about their background or better yet, what exactly they want to do, I can do little more than point to the permian basin and say "JOBS ARE HERE!!!".

I don't work in O&G, but my understanding is that they'll take civils and turn them into whatever they need. They might start out as field guys but can move up into facilities & such after some of the green is knocked out.

Regardless, my email is in my profile if you need more help.

I can't speak to the engineering myself either, but there seems to be more homes available in my NW Midland neighborhood. So maybe housing is catching up a little bit. Which used to be a huge concern out here. The prices may still be crazy though.

There are approximately 270 homes on the market in Midland right now according to a realtor friend of mine.

And on average they will be sold in less than 30 days.

Eh it's catching up. A year ago this time, there were 2 houses to rent on MLS. This year - 10+. Same is true about decent houses to buy. Prices haven't reflected anything yet but I believe it is not far away. Conoco Phillips recently announced they are moving engineers back to Houston. Just my 2 cents. Oh and btw, oil production is at a high, demand at a low.

What?

From what I understand, yes there are more units available, but the average time on the market for these places are at all time lows.

You mention people moving engineering services back to Houston. Sure, that's happening a bit, but someone has to site, drill, frack, and service the well. Someone is going to have to construct all the infrastructure for all the wells going in all over west texas. None of those jobs are going away.

Pioneer is looking to add another 200-500 in the next two years? (The number changes depending on who you ask and who's asking).

There's still another 10,000+ worker demand in the oilfield. Our unemployment level is still miles below 'normal'. From what I've been hearing in the land development arena is that oil drilling, and subsequently the population, is going to continue to expand out here before any real contraction occurs.

Massive man camps are going in wherever people can find water & sewer.

There's a plan to construct a 56 story combined usage building in downtown. Rumors of another 8 story living complex going in near downtown are on the way.

City of Midland (proper city limits) population was give or take 110,000 in 2010. Best estimates I've seen put that number at 140k-150k. Population projections into 2017 are 170k.

I didn't see your email in your profile predmid.

I got some more information from them. One of them apparently has applied to halliburton, exxonmobile, chevron, cj energy, union pacific, schlimbere, kleinfelder, and koch.

It looks like he applied mainly for field engineer, maintenance enginerr, piping design, stuructural design, project management, coil and tubing designing. I think that is what it was. Obviously, none of these make any sense to me. Thanks for your input earlier. I don't think he has heard back from anyone.
