I'm moving to Abilene in October and wondering if anyone had any advice on housing and what to do there and such.

Housing: looking at Apartments any recommendations, or areas of town to avoid

What is there to do: I enjoy the outdoors, and country music, and most night life scenes etc.

Nightlife: The Lucky Mule or Guitars and Cadillacs.
Don't know much in the way of apartments

Gerard Real Estate has some nice rental properties they manage and they run a good shop

some older apartments and a few new ones out "by the mall"
that's south end of town on Buffalo Gap Road
also where most of the restaurants and hotels are

The old Wooten Hotel in downtown has some apartments - never been in any of them, but they say they are pretty nice

there's duplexes all over town at odd locations here and there - some nice some not so nice

neighborhoods can be spotty -
one of the more desirable streets like Amarillo might be only a block or two over from some very less desirable street

its so dang hard to tell, looking at apartment websites, I see a picture and say oooo that looks nice, until I map it and see that its that piece of crap place my buddy lived in 20 years ago that was bad then...

seems like everything built recently was low-income related

you will have to just drive by and see what you think

Nightlife - you know, I'm old so you wouldn't want my advice anyway but I love hanging out at a bar called The Firehouse

several great restaurants to hit
Beehive also has a great bar
Cypress St Station has has micro brewery in the bar
Perini Ranch is just an all around excellent steak place to check out
we ate a lot at Sharon's Lytle Land and Cattle
and then there is the usual Buffalo Wild Wings, and other chains etc

the local A&M club is very active and would be a great way to meet a bunch of folks
check out their facebook page for updates

and for scuba - not much in the area, but something unique is Valhalla - diving in an Atlas Missile Silo

welcome to Abilene
we love it there, moved to Fort worth last year, but we miss it

If you like the outdoors, you will like the buffalo gap area. Pretty country down there. Abilene state park is down there. Nice place to go camping. Close enough to drive into Abilene to work everyday if you want to live there.
