Hey guys I will be moving to the Midland/Odessa area pretty soon to begin working with BJ services. I was just wondering if anyone on here worked for them. I am pretty excited to begin my career. I am also very anxious/ nervous to see what the midland/ odessa area is like. I grew up in Houston, went to school at A&M in College Station. So I have never really been exposed to "small town living".
I grew up in Katy 18 years, went to A&M for 4 years, then moved to Albuquerque for 3 then been in Midland for the last 18. (If you haven't guess already, I'm 43, but I know what you are about to go through)
Anyway, Midland/Odessa is very similar terrain to the Katy (grassy plains) look except everything is a few shades more toward brown than green. The only trees you will see outside of residential area is a seas of mesquite tree that resemble large bushes. Midland/Odessa (Metro Area) has 250K people spread out over a 40x20 mile patch. It is different, but we love it here. We say, from here we can go anywhere. If you like clear skys we got that in bunches. If you like windy days we got that too. If you like golf (in the wind and sun) we've got about 5-6 golf courses.
We get hot, but more like a Phoenix heat, very dry. Nothing at all like Houston in August heat. Sometimes you will wonder if it ever rains, until the one day it does and it is a gully washer. We do have seasons - 3 of them - Spring, Summer (5-6 months) and Fall, but we usually see snow more than once a year.
Midland/Odessa people are about as friendly as they get. Great place to raise kids. There are 2 junior colleges and UT of the Permian Basin. There are a handful of nightclubs. Semi-pro baseball in Midland with Football & Hockey in Odessa. Sunsets are prettier here than anything I have ever seen. The restaurants make you think no one know how to cook for themselves. I say our worst Tex-Mex food is better than most's best Tex-Mex.
Start looking for housing immediately.
I have heard the Ads for BJ services, I am not familiar with them personally.
Ask away if you need anything.
