We're in "lock down" in Spearman.
All area schools appear to be closed. I understand highways are closed between Dumas and Dalhart.
I do not konw what time it started snowing here, but we had a couple of inches on the ground by 3 am. Its still snowing (and blowing). They say the "heavy stuff" is not here yet. Is to continue through the day and night and into tomorrow.

Wind has really kicked up in the past hour. Still not much snow on the ground, but visibility is down to 100 yards or so.

Lubbock has high winds and maybe a 1/2 inch on the ground in drifts right now. It is not really cold here yet, we're still in the upper 30s.

Went to Dumas ISD from Pre-K thru 12 and I don't think this ever happened when I was there.

This is the first time Pantex closed for weather in a long time, and Canyon ISD rarely closes.

I-40 is now closed both directions from Amarillo.

Ain't that the truth. I attended K-12 at CISD, and during that whole time I doubt that we had any more than 3 days off for snow, total. My fifth grade year we had one day off for a blizzard, and they made us come to school for a full day on a Saturday to make up for it.

Y'all be careful on the roads -

Left for work this morning at 6.45. Got to the north end of Dumas on 287 and it was blocked off. Had to run backroads to make it up to Etter. A couple of times I couldn't see the end of the hood on my truck. It is a very bad storm. Ran up to Wally world about 30 minutes ago and the parking lot is full of stranded truckers/travelers. 87 from Dalhart to Texline and 385 north of Dalhart closed last night when the evening news was on.

8+ inches in Spearman now. Drifts are getting big. Hearing of 12 foot drifts in the city of Dalhart. Went out to feed and could barely see the hood of the truck and dad decided to send us home for safety reasons.

Have drifts in front of my garage as high as the garage door windows and in front of the car port as high as the hood of my pickup.
Hope I can get either vehicle out tomorrow.
My dad - in the country 18 miles south of town (Spearman)- said he got out this morning but barely made it back in after feeding cattle. He was certain that the road would be blocked by drifts and he'd be snowed in by this afternoon.

We ended up with about 12 inches at Bushland. Worked out in it pretty much all day feeding steers at the research feedlot, checking on wheat pasture steers, and calves out on range. Not fun at all. We needed the moisture badly, though.

Used to work at Bushland from 82-84. Bunch of strange, lovable people. Still one of my favorite places.

EDIT: Okay, here are the saved satellite photos showing the snow cover and its disappearance

The first power failure, at 1 am Friday morning, wiped out a router here. AT&T couldn't get up here until Saturday evening to work on it, largely because of road conditions.

They did something I had never seen before. They ordered a new part at midnight and it was delivered in Gruver at 4 am!

After ordering the part, the technician went to New Mexico and got back Sunday afternoon. He finally got it back up and running at midnight.

So we had no Internet during the storm.

There were apparently some pretty hefty losses of cattle in some of the feedlots.

I've heard figures from 800 to 1200 dead cattle in one feedlot and they were still counting.

400 in another feedlot.

I understand that it is all insured. Now if only AIG comes through.

(Actually, I have no idea who the insurance is with.)

Not enough moisture this far south, can't speak for the northern plains.

But the wind has been blowing like the dickens the last week, sucking up moisture.

Doesn't matter much for our wheat, dryland is almost 100% gone, and the blizzard took the temperature down to 19 degrees.

Irrigated wheat is a lovely shade of brown after that.

Kind of hard not to. He does the radio ads for the local A&M club when they sponsor Aggie football games.
