One thing I like about Channel 13 is that some days I can tune in and think that I am still in 1986. You might get Dave Ward, Sharra Fryer, Marvin, Bob Allen, and Ed Brandon. They might go for a little diversity with the new blood Melanie Lawson.

The last couple of times I watched him I thought he seemed really out of breath. I didn't realize that he had heart problems that were probably causing that condition.

how many places can you quit to get drug rehab and then be rehired for work?

I say they should use Herzog, he's an Ag and he's getting better at the whole TV thing every day. He's actually pretty damn good.

The best they have had was a few years ago, one named Heidi something, she was great.

I got to see a live news broadcast in their studio in 1975. The newscasters were Dave Ward, Ed Brandon, Marvin Zindler, and some sports guy a don't recognize. Still have a picture of the 4 of them. Pretty amazing three of them are still around.

You would think houston traffic or a crackhead would've picked at least one them off.

That Channel 13 group has been around forever. I believe Bob Allen replaced Dan Lovett in the 70's.

I'll miss Ed Brandon.

Shara's retired, I think she is married to a big ol'fat cat attorney in town.

She still does specials from time to time, I recall one where she interviewed Bush #41 a while back.

Here's the true story about Ed's goofy eye. I heard this from a KTRK reporter.

He showed up on the air one night somewhat out of sorts. His face was red around the eye. As the newscast continued, they'd cut to Ed to tease the weather. Everytime they did, the eye was getting more swollen. During weather, he told viewers he had poked himself with a pointer (they used those and actual maps before they rolled out all of the CGI stuff). By the end of the newcast, it was swollen shut. For the next few weeks, the swelling disappeared, but the eye never returned to normal.

Turns out Ed was banging some dude's wife between the newscasts, and the dude confronted him at the studio parking lot as Ed rushed in to do the show. The dude crushed him with a punch to the eye. Ed went on the air a few minutes later.

Blow AND adultrey. They should have modeled the movie Anchorman after Channel 13.

It almost seems like they did.

Chinese Demo, Ed played for the other team, so I think that dude's wife was safe.... the "dude" on the other hand....

Shara Fryer had cancer (I want to say of the colon but that might not be correct).

Shara beat the cancer, that was another of her specials on 13, post retirement.


I thought Ed was a fruit too, suppose he could be a switch hitter though.

There was a rumor about Ed and underage boys. Don't think it was ever proven though.

Houston television icon and longtime member of the ABC13 family Ed Brandon died peacefully last night in Houston.

Ed came to Houston in 1972 to become the weathercaster for 13 Eyewitness News. KTRK's station management gave him the title of "Texas' Most Experienced Weathercaster."

Ed played a prominent role on Live at Five, and Eyewitness News at 6 and 10pm, alongside anchors Dave Ward, Shara Fryer, Gina Gaston, Melanie Lawson, Art Rascon, Sports Director Bob Allen and Action 13's Marvin Zindler.

ABC13 General Manager Henry Florsheim said, "Ed was part of the Eyewitness team that formed the foundation for ABC13 today. Ed presented weather with a smile and made it understandable for all."

A native Texan, Ed was born in Texarkana, Texas in 1942 and attended Austin's McCallum High School and the University of Texas at Austin. He started his broadcast career as a disc jockey at radio stations in Texarkana and Longview. After a stint as an announcer at an Austin radio station, he moved into television as a talk show host and weather reporter at KHFI-TV in Austin.

In May 1972, Ed left Austin to accept the weather position with KTRK-TV. He retired from ABC13 in May 2007 after 35 years with the company.

Ed's brother Burt Branstetter tells us, "Ed was the sweetest guy I ever knew and loved his Channel 13 family."

Ed served for many years on the Advisory Board of the Houston Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. He hosted an annual golf tournament benefiting Cenikor, one of the nation's largest and most successful non-profit residential treatment centers for indigent alcoholics and drug addicts.

Ed will be greatly missed by friends, family and many Houstonians whose lives he touched. A public memorial service is being planned.

Another piece of the Houston I grew up with is gone.
