I'm replacing our bright blue carpet sometime soon. Where's the best place to get carpet in Houston? I don't really care about brands or anything--I just want high quality for a good price. I need to get it installed as well, so advice for that is also appreciated.

I recently replaced all the carpet in a house I just bought. I used Gary's Carpet. They are off the I-10 eastbound feeder around Dairy Ashford (maybe Eldridge or Kirkwood, don't recall exactly where). They were easy to work with and did a good job installing it. My sister in law used them as well to do one room with positive results.

Just to warn you, carpet has gotten freakishly expensive in the past few years. I shopped around, and it was the same story everywhere. Nice carpet will run $4-5+ a square foot installed. Builder grade can be had quite a bit cheaper though.

Carpet Giant is good too. I used them a little over a year ago. If they have the carpet you like in stock you can get a good deal on it. They have quite a bit in stock. Negotiate the price down, we got 10 or 12 % off what it was listed at in the warehouse. Just ask for the best deal they can give you.

It was an easy deal too, I took in my room and closet dimensions, and they went off that, never came to the house to measure. I gave them my exact sq ft X 15% waste and that's what they priced it at. When I went to Lowes or Home Depot, don't remember which, they had to come out and measure, and they were ridiculous. I calculated ~ 700 sq ft, and they said something like 900, I argued, but they wouldn't budge, and they were more expensive anyway.

yeah, i noticed that the prices i've been seeing are pretty much astronomical. i probably need 1000 square feet or so... $4-5/sq ft is too much.

You can probably find some nice carpet for low 3ish. I honestly couldn't tell much difference between those models and the 4.40 stuff we picked out (but my wife could). The cost was an eye opener though. We negotiated a $2500 carpet allowance when we bought our house...needless to say that didn't go very far!

$4-$5 a sq.ft. I did my house about 12-years ago and it was pretty nice carpet for $22/sq.yard (or $2.44 sq.ft.).

Yeah, the salesguy admitted their prices have spiked massively the past few years. I would have felt like I had gotten taken, but prices at other carpet places were similar (and places like Lowes/HD were worse). Don't think carpet is such the cheap option anymore for flooring like it used to be.

Where do you live?

I used to be a sales rep for a flooring company to the carpet stores.

It has been ridiculous. All carpet (other than wool) is made out of plastic, which is derived from oil. Oil was cheap back in the day, but with the spikes up over $70, the price of manufacturing has gone up tremendously.

I live in Missouri City. I haven't shopped hardcore yet... so far I've been to floors galore in stafford and lowes/home depot. it seems like there might be some good places to go in stafford or on fondren somewhere, but there are plenty of shady places around those parts as well, so who knows.

Damn, I did a really nice 18" tile for 3.75 sqft, and I thought that carpet was much less than tile.
