Anybody know the story inside these 3 red circles?
Former trash dumps, ship channel dredging, something else?

I may be mistaken but I think at some point during WW2 those properties were used for munitions storage.

I know for sure some large tracts of undeveloped land right there at 610 and Buffalo Bayou were just not certain it was those properties.

I thought the WWII ammo dump was that land on the north side of the bayou at the Beltway.

If you look at it on HistoricAerials.com, you can see work roads on those sites from the 60s through early 90s.

No idea if it was a trash dump or dirt depository for dredging.

I always thought the one on the East side of 610 was dredge spoils.

If you look on the east side of 610 you can see poly pipe where it looks like the pump it from the channel

They are dredge material placement areas. Currently covered by vegetation. They were possibly going to be used again for the current dredging project but I believe they intend to "close" them permanently now after push back from the neighborhoods.

The munitions site is much further to the east down towards Channelview.

The one on the east side is for sure ship channel dredge spoils. I have been out there on top of the berm at the north end. The empty vegetated area just beyond the northwest corner south of the rail line is the southern parcel of the Federated Metals State Superfund site. The production facility north of the railroad used to smelt recycled metals and disposed of magnesium dross and refractory brick from the smelter on the southern parcel.

At some point in that process, they had smelted down some old VW engines that contained traces of thorium, which ended up in the dross piles, making the site radioactive. When I was out there in the late 90s, we were trenching the piles to verify depth and radionuclide content of the dross. They had a fairly consistent problem even back in the late 90s with homeless cutting through the fence and sleeping on the dross piles because no vegetation would grow in them and apparently bugs were pretty scarce too.

I was doing some surface water sampling. Don't recall what the contaminant was, but not a pleasant one. Walked up on a vato filling up his water bottle from the pond. I gave him a clean bottle of water and pointed him away from the facility.
