My wife and I are contemplating moving towards the Houston area. We live halfway between DFW and Houston. Our kids go to a small school with limited educational and athletic opportunities. My wife is a teacher in the same district. I travel extensively for work so I have to commute 2 hours to IAH airport 2-3 times a month.

If you could choose, where would be a good place to look at relocation to?

The biggest fear for my kids is going from a school where they have 100 kids per grade to a school that may have 1,000 or more kids per grade.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Not kidding, move to College Station. Ground shuttle is 1 hour to IAH and will pick you up at your house. Get more bang for your buck, bigger schools but not huge schools, and less of the riff raff and other nonsense that happens in megacities like Houston.

I advise you stay put. If you're able to make it work in a non-metro area consider yourself lucky.

We have thought about CS. I think that living amongst the students does give us pause. Thanks for your insight.

In a lot of ways we do agree with you when we talk to some folks that live in the metro areas. I think our biggest concern is for our kids as far as opportunities. Being closer to the airport would only be an added bonus. I have a company car so the commuting time is the only hassle. Nothing like landed at IAH after a trip and having to get back to my car and drive two hours. Oh well, first world problems for me!!

Look into some of the districts north of Humble. I live in Kingwood but am in Montgomery County and zoned to New Caney ISD. It is one of the faster growing ISDs in the state and both my kids have had good experiences. One of them graduated from the early college HS with his associates degree and will graduate from Sam in less than 2 years...so there are good opportunities for students.

...and I can get to IAH in less than 15 mins.

Look at 77386 south of 99 (Grand Parkway). Schools are Conroe ISD and plenty of home choices. Can be to the airport on 20-25 minutes down Hardy.

In Montgomery county too

Go west of Houston to the Bellville or Brenham area. Close to Houston, Austin or College Station. Affordable housing at this time, but the area is growing.

Depending on where in Houston you live, you could land at IAH, get into your car, and still drive an hour and a half.

Maybe Montgomery if you must move. I'm in 77055 and love it, but that's a pretty big hurdle to go from rural to this (unless you're going to private school your kids to get reduced class sizes).

I have quite a few friends in Pebble Creek and it's awesome. They never really cross paths with students, unless they need a baby sitter or something. It's several miles south of town and not in proximity to any student neighborhoods. We hope to be living there in a few yrs. Great family environment and community.

Waterfront on NE side of Lake Conroe in the forest in Montgomery County. Less crowded than south end of lake and be sure to find property facing SE for the predominant summer winds, and sun and moon rises. Close travel to IAH, kolaches in Roans Prairie and Kyle Field. Relaxation and kids loving nature and boating is ideal.

Nope. Stay away from my Montgomery. Growing too fast as it is. We don't need anyone else.

I live in setx now and thats how long it takes me. It takes just as long to get to my new house from our old place in league city as it did to go from league city to cypress where a ton of my family lives.

There is VERY little that would get me to move back to a major metro are.

OP, YOURE GOING THE WRONG WAY!

I don't know how old you are, but CS has sprawled out so far South that I think you could largely avoid students unless you went on campus or out to eat in places where students work. You can look at census numbers and get an idea of how much the permanent population has grown in the last decade or two.

My wife and I are around 40 and kids are 4th and 7th grade. My job moved us around to 3 other states before coming back to East Texas. My wife is a teacher out of necessity due to the lack of professional jobs locally. It is a crime what she is compensated as a teacher. I have a remote job with travel so where we live is less about me and more opportunity for the family.

An example is my youngest loves and is really good at soccer. She plays in a YMCA league, but the school does not have soccer.

Our 7th grader is not challenged enough even though she is in "advanced" classes. Our district only offers dual credit English. My understanding is that lager schools have opportunities for graduates to finish with an associate's degree.

Move to setx and go to private school like we did. We absolutely love it out there and it is a clean shot to IAH and there are tons of sports and academic opportunities. We went in a whim and it was a great choice for us. The home we moved from we purchased for a specific elementary so we weren't chasing schools or anything like that.

No chance you are getting from College Station to IAH in 1 hour. Hour and a half at least.

Stay way from Stratford and Memorial High school. That is where the swingers live according to one poster.
