I haven't been out in a long time, so I can't give a detailed review. But I'd say if you're into astronomy, or have a kid who is, you probably ought to go out there at least once to check it out. But as you can see, they have limited spots. If a lot of people show up, that limits how much time each person has to go up and look through the big scopes, so it makes sense to restrict the number of attendees to maintain the quality of experience.

Got my kid a beginner(ish) telescope last year and he likes astronomy so we will definitely go some day but not knowing how the weather will be makes it tough to get tickets.

If you have a ticket for the program to look through the big scopes, that's indoors. They also do a little educational program, so it's more than just looking up. You can also take your own telescope out to Brazos Bend anytime if that's the nearest open dark spot for you.

My guess is the worry about weather more has to do with wanting a clear day so the telescope isn't just blocked by clouds….

I've been 5 times while camping with Cub Scouts, but the last time I went was around 2017. IMO, the most enjoyable part was visiting with the amateur astronomers and looking through the telescopes they had set up on the observation deck. Some of them had really impressive setups. I'm not sure if amateurs still set up there or not.

Every time I went, they had the big telescope focused some really distant object that just wasn't very impressive to look at because it was just a white speck. We would have much more enjoyed the big telescope focused in on something close and familiar (Moon, nearby planet, Saturn's rings, etc.).

Brazos Bend SP is a great place to camp, especially with kids. You get to experience different ecosystems (swamp/marsh, grassland prairie, forest). They have an extensive network of hike & bike trails. The programs offered by the Nature Center are some of the best I've experienced at a state park, especially the guided hikes.
