I'm currently researching whole home generators in the 25-30KW range to ensure reliable cooling for my family, especially during the heat-sensitive times. I'm particularly interested in the Kohler and Cummins brands, but I'm open to insights on Generac as well.

My main questions are:

Do any of you have experience with Kohler or Cummins generators in the specified size range? Any recommendations or insights on their performance and reliability?

Can anyone suggest a reliable installer for whole home generators in the Spring area? I want to ensure a smooth installation process.

I'm also curious about the long-term maintenance involved with water-cooled generators. Are there any significant challenges or concerns I should be aware of?

I have a 18 kw air cooled Cummins. Haven't had a real need for it yet but we used these folks for ours. They also installed one for my parents.

I have a 22kW Generac air cooled unit. Installed a few years ago just before the big freeze. It ran 80+ hours that week like a champ and has already paid for itself in my opinion. Liquid cooled units will be much more expensive ($25-30k vs. $15k). Check your power load calculation. When running on generator, you don't run both ACs plus oven, washing machine, dryer, etc all at the same time. You can certainly do this if you get a big enough unit but can save some costs if you are smart about things. I installed a load shed module on my upstairs AC so if power draw exceeds capacity, it would kick the AC off to keep everything else going.

I also live in the Spring area and used Grasten Power Technologies out of Conroe. They were great to work with and took care of everything, including first two years of maintenance. I got 3 quotes and they were the cheapest at the time.

I got quotes from both aagenpro and Grasten.

Now, I am waiting on HOA approval.

I went with Grasten after getting 3 quotes. They were the cheapest and did zero sales pressure whatsoever, which was refreshing.

I haven't had it installed yet, so I can't comment beyond that.

They didn't put mine in, but they do service it. No complaints from me.

Grasten and generator supercenter are the two main companies but a trust worthy master electrician and plumber can usually do this for significantly cheaper.

So afterwards, the annual maintenance contracts can be done by any generator company -- including Grasten?

Yes

im pretty sure those generator sales guys hire those same electricians and plumbers youre talmbout - then they get to mark it up. if you can buy the unit, then sub out the specific scopes, and go through the headaches of being a contractor (permitting/generator pad/etc.) you'll undoubtedly end up cheaper - but you probably have a real job and would be better off paying the sales guys.
