I think we paid ~$200 per month in 77079 when we lived there up until last summer.

What size of pool? I may need that phone number. Seems like $180 ish is the going rate for most companies around here.

I have a rental in 77079. Runs about $220/month which also includes filter cleanout/DE quarterly.

Geez, so not only is the most basic pool like $80k nowadays, it's roughly $200/mo just to keep clean, and then I am assuming you have to budget at least $1,000 per year for maintenance/parts replacement?

I will keep all of this in mind this June/July when the wife inevitably starts trying to pitch me on getting one. I'd love to, but geez it's not cheap. Then there's the fact that it's really only pleasant and refreshing from about late April to end of July. I am assuming October is a solid pool month as well?

You could always do it yourself…..

We take care of ours. It's not hard. Brush it, run the cleaning robot, check the chemicals.

Get a Pool RX and put it in the skimmer for algae prevention.

Hardest part is taking the filter apart twice a year to clean the big filter elements. I bet you could just pay for that part if you want.

We built our pool in 2021. I have purchased 110lbs of chlorine to this point, and I have 30lbs left.

Perfect weekly is $70/bottle, I've bought 2 and got one free with Leslie points.

Acid is cheap. I buy it from construction supply instead of the pool place.

Pool RX is $60 once a year.

I spend more on pool toys, goggles, and sunscreen I think.

$180/month in 77388.

38,000 gallon pool. It's absolutely a money pit. But it was part of the house when we bought it, so not much we can do.

Do it yourself - test the water 1-2 times a year and add what is needed. Clean the main pool filters twice a year…and maintain the chlorine…

Also - Buy a baracuda g3 pool cleaner. It agitates the floor as it sucks/cleans. Barely ever have to brush the pool compared to when we ran the Polaris….and it doesn't break down like the Polaris internal parts that seemed to always have to be changed/worked on.

If you have the discipline to pay attention to it and keep it in shape, absolutely do it yourself. If you have the tendency to forget about it for a week at a time then you should outsource cleaning and maintenance.
I've found checking on it 2-3 times a week during the hot season has saved me from big algae problems because random things can chew through your chlorine levels fast. My neighbor has a weekly service and his pool guy fights algae all summer…I think it's because he's not there often enough. I think he's paying around $150/mo.

Thanks! They aren't coming up in the Google, if you have a number or anything for them I'd appreciate it.

Everyone I talk to says it's better to just move to a house with a pool rather than building one.

As for season, in Houston I'd say April through November, really. And if you have a heater, all year long.

Get a robotic pool cleaner, I only have to brush off the steps every couple of weeks where it can't reach, it takes care of the walls. I put 2-3 chlorine tabs in the basket weekly and that's it. I'm not sure what all chemicals y'all have to put in there regularly but I haven't ever needed them in 20 years of pool ownership.

I've had two houses with pools and 99% of the time that's all it needed. Once I had a CYA buildup but just had to drain part of the water and refill. As long as there's chlorine I haven't gotten algae. For whatever reason my ph at both houses has stayed stable.

I would be interested to know who you are currently using. Im right across I-10 and paying closer to $240/mo to current service. My neighbor uses a different service but they are within a few dollars of each other.

Have a salt water chlorine generator.

April - October:
- Test water weekly
- Most of the time we just add a couple pints of muriatic acid ($9/gal)
- Every other month or so it needs 2 bags of salt $10/bag)
- Every 4 months usually takes a pale of calcium hardness increaser ($60)
- Every 6 months or so the CYA gets too low then I add a jug of it ($35/gal)

November-March:
- Test 2x per month
- Add a pint of acid a week since we have a continuous waterfall which keeps Ph up

We run the robot every 3 days which keeps it clean, and I brush on days the lawn guy comes since creates a grass ring on waterline tile. Takes all of 5 min. I clean the cartridge filters every 3-6 months depending on the filter pressure reading.

Pool test chemicals are cheap and can be here overnight via Amazon.

We've also taken a 2 week vacation with zero worries as there will always be chlorine.

We can afford a pool service, but it's pretty easy to manage.

195/mo in 77479.

My pool is a nightmare because we have a live oak with a canopy that completely covers it. During leaf drop and pollen season we have to empty the skimmers and vacuum multiple times a day. I'd lose the tree but it looks nice and keeps the pool cooler in the summer. But its a battle for the pool guy to keep the water looking decent in the spring. He's also having to clean the filters multiple times a month. No way I'd want to handle it myself.

I'm hoping you meant 195/month! I'm in Commonwealth - who are you using? We used to use Pool Pro out of MoCity until they went up to 250/mo. I stopped out of protest, but now I am sick of doing it myself again.

Oops, yes 195 a mo, edited. Brush, vacuum, emtpying everything, and chem...but doesn't cover filter cleanings. Has done various minor repairs at reasonable cost.

And hey neighbor, I am in Commonwealth as well. I use Marathon Pools. Small outfit I think, either the main guy, Bernie, or his helper. His cel is 832-860-3396. Can tell him Scott, the dude with the awful tree in your neighborhood, referred you.

You can have all that with a boat and you aren't stuck with it when you move on to the next thing.

True but they are not mutually exclusive. It's great to get off the boat straight into the pool in the summer!
