Since most of you on this board are fat slobs, it probably won't apply, but if any of you are out there doing the Houston Marathon or 1/2 Marathon, be sure to grab a beer from me at the Karbach tent located at mile(s) 24 & 11 respectively.

We usually hand out smaller cups of beer, but if you get my attention, I'll go grab you a full can.

By mile 24, I'll be looking for the car back tent.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

I'm not a runner at all, but I'm very confident I could go out and mostly walk, but partially jog, a marathon on no prep.

Edit - See the time limit is 6 hours. Thought it was 8. That would make it a little tighter. But still do-able

Drinking beer during a marathon. Not the preferred hydration source.

Marathoners from out of state running in Houston, turbo sucking humid hydrocarbon-soaked air laced with mosquitos and fentanyl flakes, have got to be taking a few years off of their earth journey already. A beer won't hurt that much more.

I have no idea what the ring leader will bring. I'm just a friend showing up to help out.

Only if you're running.

You'll likely have to stop and wait if you want a full can, so if you're going for a PR or will have issues getting your body to restart, I suggest just grabbing a cup on the run.

Not registered in the marathon, but may stop by mile 24 and join the race.

Mile 11 will be more fun cause it'll include the half marathon folks.

It was y'all at like mile 22, the Shipley Donuts on a stick around mile 11ish and the Bloody Mary bar at the turn at 20. All before 10am. Never to be seen at any other marathon. Keep being you Houston. Love this town.

Last year I ran past several beer tents (in quest of a fast time). This year I'm running (the half) for fun and to stop at fun looking spots along the way. With the temp/humidity forecast no sense in looking for a fast time.
Consistency: It's only a virtue if you're not a screw-up.

Yeah man, I saw the temp and humidity forecast and said, if I can't get a fast time, I'm not even gonna bother with it this year.

I think next year might be bad too.

The weather on Sunday is gonna suck but we've been on a pretty good run of cold weather.

Last 2 years have been great. I think in the last 6 runs there's only been one time where it's been warmer but not like this.

It was bound to happen. At least standing in the corrals will be comfortable…

The one time I did the Houston full, the weather was warm-ish. For true runners, it sucked, but for me, it was perfect. I may be able to bike pretty well, but I can't run for **** . I had to negative split the last 8 miles just to get under my goal of 5 hours, and I did.

I will never understand marathon running. I gym and jog on a regular basis, so not at all against running. But marathon running just seems so extreme that it can't be healthy for the body overall. We were not designed to run 26 miles at a time. Cannot be good on the bones and ligaments, and I wonder if it's good for the heart.

Plenty of studies show it's fine, even beneficial. "Bad for the joints/bones" is a myth not based on any science.
I understand marathoning is not for everyone tho.

My first marathon was houston in 2017. Weather was was worse than this. Like high 60's at the start and up into the 80s around noon if I remember correctly. Weather since has been pretty much perfect every year.

Isn't it going to be in the mid to upper 60's Sunday morning? Or low 70's at worst? Seems like perfect running weather, but guessing the body get so overheated with long distance running that cold temps are much more ideal?

Amazing how many fat people have asked me if I know how bad marathons and running in general are for me. Could I do things that are better for my overall health? Yes. But I found something I like and the challenge of it motivates me. I guarantee I'm healthier than I was before I got started on half's and fulls and was 65 pounds heavier….

Perfect marathon weather (for most people) is 40's. And biggest thing is dew point which will be pretty high on Sunday.

A 5 or 10K in the 70s is ok. For a marathon that is very warm and takes a lot out of you. Especially if it's humid.

I think marathoners are insane but I said the same thing about half and I've done one the last 2 years and signed up for 2 this year. Still don't see myself ever doing a full cause a half isn't too hard to complete with normal exercise.

That was the year. I knew there was a bad one in the last few years but couldn't remember for sure which year.

We've been fortunate with the weather over the last few years so figured we were due for a warm year which I'll take over bad rain.

Correct. More sweat = loss of fluids, electrolytes and salt. The loss becomes a runaway train unless you really stay on top of it.

The hotter it gets, the higher the heart rate to pump more blood to cool the body. Higher heart rate means you can't use that energy to go fast.

What is amazing to me are the Ironman races in the summer given the heat and humidity. Makes marathons look like a warm up.

No doubt. I could maybe see it in a place with more of a dry heat, where it cools down somewhat at night and the water is pretty chilly to cool the body off. But I am talking about a dry-90 MAX. Not 105 in Az or anything.
