what's the best place in that area for sushi and other options (i.e. normal chinese/asian food).

ETA: also needs to have a good bar/drinks

matsu sushi is actually a pretty good hole in the wall.

Aggie owned Sushi Jin on Memorial @ Dairy Ashford.

Edit to add there are no good sushi places in Katy.

I think Tobiuo is very good high quality sushi. But its definitely a little higher end and may not be what you are looking for if you are after a more normal american-style sushi restaurant

Kuu off I-10 and Gessner is good. Very expensive upscale sushi, but the happy hour is a wonderful compromise. Great drinks as well, bar tenders are very accommodating.

Edit to add that Gya-Kaku is off Wilcrest and I-10 and is a fun self-grill spot that has really good meat and drink options at a very reasonable price. $60 for two and drinks and you'll be happy.

Food is pretty damned good but the atmosphere sucks awfully.

It's a sardine can of a space then throw in the crowds and it's damn near not worth the headache.

Sushi Hana on 99. It's technically in Richmond, so don't order from the other Sushi Hana that's actually in Katy. That's a regrettable mistake.

Izakaya Wa and Sushi Jin are really the only two great options. Both are serviceable,

I second this. This has got to be the best place in Katy. I really enjoyed it.

Izakaya Wa is also great because of the awesome skewers and Asahi on tap.

And I've never been to a sushi place in Houston that had more actual Japanese customers than Izakaya Wa.

Sushi Miyagi, Bellaire and Belt. It has really weird hours. It's in a crappy strip mall. It's delicious. Run by a old man and his wife from Okinawa.

I'm far from an expert, but Kokai near Katy Mills Mall was really good both times I went there.
